As the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine wraps up in Indianapolis, the AFC is at a crossroads. While the conference remains home to some of the league’s most elite signal-callers, the 2025 season exposed significant cracks in the foundations of several perennial contenders. From the quarterback vacuum in Las Vegas to the defensive front struggles in Baltimore, here is a breakdown of the most pressing needs across the AFC.
AFC East: The Search for “The Guy” (and Safety)
The division formerly ruled by defense and steady QB play is now a scramble for offensive identity.
- New York Jets (Pick No. 2): After a disappointing 2025 campaign, the Jets find themselves in a quarterback conundrum. With Fernando Mendoza likely off the board at No. 1, GM Joe Douglas must decide if Ty Simpson (Alabama) or a veteran trade is the answer to finally stabilize the position.
- Buffalo Bills: The “Superman” era of Josh Allen is under fire as the surrounding cast ages. The Bills’ most glaring needs are Wide Receiver (seeking a true WR1 to complement Khalil Shakir) and Safety, where the void left by Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer remains unfilled.
- Miami Dolphins: Following the firing of Mike McDaniel and the benching of Tua Tagovailoa, Miami is in full reboot mode. Beyond the QB question, the Dolphins are desperate for Interior Offensive Line help and a dynamic Tight End like Oregon’s Kenyon Sadiq to unlock their vertical threats.
- New England Patriots: Fresh off a Super Bowl surge led by their defense, the Patriots’ 2026 priority is finding a dominant Edge Rusher. They need a foundational piece to pair with K’Lavon Chaisson to maintain their defensive identity.
AFC West: The Mendoza Sweepstakes
The story of the entire draft begins and ends with the Las Vegas Raiders.
- Las Vegas Raiders (Pick No. 1): There is no mystery here. The Raiders are locked in on Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza. After years of quarterback instability, Mendoza is viewed as the “inflection point” that could finally turn the franchise into a consistent winner.
- Kansas City Chiefs (Pick No. 9): A rare “down” year has left the Chiefs with a surprisingly long shopping list. With several veterans heading to free agency, Brett Veach must prioritize Running Back (to replace Isiah Pacheco/Kareem Hunt) and Cornerback to support Steve Spagnuolo’s aggressive scheme.
- Denver Broncos: Sean Payton’s offense needs more “teeth.” The primary needs include a reliable Wide Receiver to complement Courtland Sutton and a complete overhaul of the Linebacker room, which could be depleted by free agency.
- Los Angeles Chargers: Protecting Justin Herbert remains the directive. Injuries to Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater exposed a lack of depth, making the interior offensive line the top priority for Jesse Minter’s physical system.
AFC North: Trench Warfare
In the NFL’s most physical division, the battle is being won and lost at the line of scrimmage.
- Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals face a potential mass exodus on the defensive line, with Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai hitting free agency. Their “dire need” is Edge Rusher and Interior Defensive Line to prevent the defense from collapsing.
- Cleveland Browns: The offensive line has become a “nightmare” due to age and expiring contracts (Bitonio, Conklin, Pocic). Cleveland must use its draft capital to infuse Youth on the Offensive Line before the unit becomes a liability for their expensive backfield.
- Baltimore Ravens: A defense that was once a league benchmark fell to the bottom fourth in pressure rate in 2025. The Ravens must repair the Defensive Front and add Pass-Catching Depth to give Lamar Jackson more weapons outside of Zay Flowers.
- Pittsburgh Steelers: With the draft on their home turf, the Steelers are looking for Quarterback competition for Ty Simpson and a “metabolic” Wide Receiver to pair with DK Metcalf.
AFC South: Protecting the Future
The young quarterbacks of the South need better infrastructure to take the next step.
- Tennessee Titans (Pick No. 4): After a rocky start for Cam Ward, the Titans need to provide him with Elite Weapons. Ohio State’s Caleb Downs (S) is a popular mock target to anchor the secondary, but adding a blue-chip Wide Receiver is essential.
- Houston Texans: While C.J. Stroud remains elite, the Interior Offensive Line struggled mightily in run blocking last season. Bulk in the trenches is the No. 1 priority to balance the offense.
- Indianapolis Colts: GM Chris Ballard is hunting for Speed on the Edge. With Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam slated for free agency, the Colts need a high-motor rusher to ensure their defensive pressure doesn’t evaporate.
- Jacksonville Jaguars: The secondary is the primary concern, with three starters potentially leaving in free agency. Expect the Jags to target Cornerback and Interior Defensive Line early in April.
