The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reached an intriguing point in training camp. The team continues preparing for the 2026 season. Several players have already started separating themselves from the pack. Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield looks comfortable in Tampa Bay’s revamped offense. The quarterback has also developed chemistry with several weapons. However, the biggest defensive story might come from a young edge rusher. David Walker continues making noise every day at camp. The second year outside linebacker has quickly become one of Tampa Bay’s most interesting players.
David Walker Keeps Making Plays
Walker missed his entire rookie season after suffering a torn ACL. Now, he looks determined to make up for lost time. According to the Buccaneers, Walker keeps creating pressure during practice. The team noted his consistent presence in the backfield. ESPN also reported that Walker recorded another would-be sack during Sunday’s practice. He has worked with both the first and second-team defenses. Walker brings an intriguing skill set to Tampa Bay’s defense. Head coach Todd Bowles has praised his power and movement. Walker can attack from the edge while showing some inside-linebacker traits. That versatility could earn him a meaningful role this season. Still, Walker must continue proving himself once preseason games begin. Training camp production only tells part of the story.
Baker Mayfield Builds Chemistry
Mayfield also continues making plays during camp. The Buccaneers have introduced changes under offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. The offense appears to emphasize more movement and a stronger ground attack. Mayfield has responded with several impressive throws during camp. He recently connected with Bucky Irving for a touchdown. The play showed the quarterback’s ability to create explosive plays with Tampa Bay’s running game. Mayfield has also worked extensively with Chris Godwin Jr. Godwin caught a red-zone touchdown during Sunday’s practice. Bowles praised the veteran receiver’s health and overall performance. The coach said Godwin looks healthier and mentally sharp. He also praised Godwin’s leadership and playmaking ability. That represents encouraging news for Tampa Bay. A healthy Godwin could give Mayfield another dependable target.
Rookie Ted Hurst III Makes His Case
Rookie receiver Ted Hurst III has also attracted plenty of attention. The Buccaneers selected Hurst in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Tampa Bay wanted another vertical threat for the offense. Hurst has quickly started building trust with Mayfield. The rookie caught a back-shoulder touchdown during Sunday’s red-zone work. He also impressed coaches with his ability to track the football. Bowles previously said Mayfield trusts Hurst. That trust could become important as the season approaches. Hurst still needs to earn his regular-season role. However, his progress gives Tampa Bay another reason for optimism.
Injury Updates Remain Important
The Buccaneers still have several injury situations to monitor. All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs remains sidelined with a hamstring injury. He has not returned to full practice work. Bowles said Tampa Bay wants to work Wirfs back gradually once he gets healthy. That approach makes sense given Wirfs’ importance. The Buccaneers cannot afford to rush their star tackle. His health will remain one of the team’s biggest camp storylines. Cornerback Benjamin Morrison also continues dealing with a hamstring issue. He has remained out of practice recently. Morrison faces competition for a starting role. Therefore, missed practices could affect his chances.
Vita Vea Situation Remains Worth Watching
Vita Vea also remains part of Tampa Bay’s offseason story. General manager Jason Licht recently said the Buccaneers have no plans to trade their veteran defensive tackle. Licht also said the team continues working toward a resolution with Vea’s agent. The goal remains having Vea in Tampa Bay for 2026 and beyond. Vea’s presence would provide another major piece for Bowles’ defense. His ability to control the middle remains important. Tampa Bay will need that strength when the regular season arrives.
Jets Practices Could Provide Another Test
The Buccaneers now have another major test approaching. Tampa Bay will work with the New York Jets during upcoming joint practices. Those sessions should provide valuable competition before preseason games arrive. Joint practices often reveal more than normal camp sessions. Players face unfamiliar opponents and different schemes. Coaches also get a better opportunity to evaluate their roster. The Buccaneers have already seen several young players emerge during camp. Now, they can test those players against another NFL roster.
The Bigger Picture
Tampa Bay still has plenty of questions to answer. However, the early signs have created plenty of optimism. Mayfield continues developing within Robinson’s offense. Godwin looks healthy and productive. Hurst continues building confidence. On defense, Walker has become one of camp’s biggest standouts. Meanwhile, young players such as Josiah Trotter and Jacob Parrish continue competing for larger roles. The injury situation also deserves attention. Wirfs and Morrison remain important names to monitor. Vea’s contract situation also remains unresolved. Still, Tampa Bay has several encouraging developments. The Buccaneers now need those developments to carry into preseason action.
If Walker keeps producing, he could become a major part of the defense. If Mayfield’s chemistry continues growing, Tampa Bay’s offense could become dangerous. For now, training camp remains the center of attention. The next few weeks should reveal much more about Tampa Bay’s 2026 roster.
