The 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked unprecedented excitement across the United States. Fans have embraced the tournament with remarkable energy and enthusiasm. Stadiums, watch parties, restaurants, and fan festivals have overflowed with supporters from around the world. Americans have joined the celebration in record numbers despite early concerns about high ticket prices and the country’s ability to host such a massive event. Instead, the tournament has become a nationwide celebration of soccer and its growing popularity. The excitement has stretched far beyond the stadiums. Fans have painted their faces, waved national flags, and marched alongside supporters from around the world. Brazilian samba music and Scottish bagpipes have echoed through the streets. Meanwhile, thousands have gathered in cities nationwide to celebrate every goal. From Boston to Los Angeles, soccer supporters have transformed public spaces into vibrant celebrations.
Boston offered one of the tournament’s best examples of that excitement. More than 1,000 fans packed City Hall Plaza during the city’s final fan festival. They celebrated every goal during England’s match against Panama. Jason Jusino, of Medford, Massachusetts, admitted he entered the tournament with few expectations. However, he quickly realized the city had not experienced this level of excitement in years. Before the tournament began, many critics questioned whether Americans would embrace the expanded World Cup. Others pointed to expensive tickets and logistical concerns. However, those worries have faded as attendance and television ratings continue reaching historic levels.
Sports analytics professor Bret Myers, from Villanova University, believes soccer has captured the nation’s attention. He explained that the tournament’s excitement has overshadowed nearly every controversy that surrounded the event before kickoff. Television ratings have supported that belief. The United States Men’s National Team opened the tournament against Paraguay on June 12. That match attracted an average audience of about 25 million viewers across Fox, Telemundo, and their streaming platforms. Nielsen reported that total as one of the largest television audiences for a soccer match in United States history.
The difference from the previous World Cup stands out even more. The United States opened the 2022 World Cup against Wales and attracted 11.7 million viewers. That match aired on a Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Paraguay match aired on a Friday night. Therefore, it reached a much larger audience. Interest remained strong throughout the group stage. More than 22 million viewers watched Team USA’s matches against Australia and Turkey. Those audiences matched recent NBA Finals and World Series broadcasts. However, they still trailed the Super Bowl by roughly 100 million viewers. They also finished close to the 23.5 million viewers who watched the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
American viewers have not limited their attention to Team USA. Fox averaged 5 million viewers across 72 group-stage matches, setting a network record. Telemundo also posted impressive numbers with an average audience of 4.6 million viewers. Those figures demonstrated growing interest in international soccer, regardless of which nations played. Fox Sports executive Mike Mulvihill shared another impressive statistic. He revealed that Fox viewers had already watched more World Cup matches by the end of the group stage than during the entire 2022 World Cup. Attendance inside the stadiums has matched those impressive television numbers. FIFA announced that approximately 4.6 million fans attended group-stage matches. Those crowds filled 99.7 percent of all available seats. That total established a new World Cup attendance record, surpassing the previous mark from the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
Fan festivals have also become major attractions throughout North America. Events across the United States, Mexico, and Canada have welcomed approximately 5.5 million visitors. Those festivals have allowed supporters without match tickets to experience the tournament alongside thousands of fellow fans. Several factors have fueled soccer’s growing popularity across the country. Major League Soccer continues expanding with more teams, larger crowds, and stronger television audiences. At the same time, international leagues like the Premier League and Liga MX have built loyal American followings over many years.
Nielsen research also shows that soccer attracts one of America’s youngest and most diverse sports audiences. Hispanic communities remain central to that growing fan base. As a result, they continue driving the sport’s growth across the country. The success of the United States Men’s National Team has added even more excitement. Team USA advanced to the knockout stage and prepared to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. The team now seeks its first World Cup knockout victory since 2002. Myers believes the opening victory played a crucial role in maintaining nationwide enthusiasm throughout the tournament.
Fans continue believing this World Cup represents another major step forward for soccer in America. Eddy Balcarcel, of Attleboro, Massachusetts, attended multiple watch parties and two matches at Gillette Stadium, known as Boston Stadium during the tournament. Although he still dislikes the high-ticket prices, he believes the overall experience exceeded his expectations. Longtime supporter Jason Jusino has followed every World Cup since the tournament came to the United States in 1994. He believes the country’s growing soccer culture reflects America’s willingness to grow, embrace new traditions, and unite behind the world’s most popular sport. As record crowds continue filling stadiums and millions tune into every match, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already become a defining moment for soccer in the United States.
