SEATTLE — The American soccer bandwagon isn’t just rolling; it’s flying. In front of a roaring, patriotic crowd of 66,925 fans at Seattle Stadium, the U.S. Men’s National Team secured a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday. The triumph keeps the USMNT perfect in Group D and officially punches their ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 with a group stage match still left to play.
The victory marks the first time in modern U.S. Soccer history that the men’s team has locked down a knockout round berth after just two group matches. Furthermore, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad has achieved something the program hasn’t done since the inaugural World Cup in 1930: winning their first two consecutive matches on the sport’s biggest stage.
The Early Spark: Chaos in the Box
Even with talismanic winger Christian Pulisic sidelined due to a calf injury, the Americans refused to let their offensive momentum stall. From the opening whistle, the U.S. overwhelmed Tony Popovic’s Socceroos with high-energy pressing and relentless flank play.
The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute. Fullback Antonee Robinson played a beautiful, low pass up the left flank to dynamic striker Folarin Balogun. Balogun turned on the jets, zipped past his defender, and fired a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box. In a panic, Australian defender Cameron Burgess mishandled the clearance, bundling the ball into his own net.
“I want to be dangerous, I want to create opportunities,” Balogun said post-match. “It might not always be myself that scores, but if I can force an error that gives us the lead, then for me it’s like a goal as well.”
With the opening tally, the USA made bizarre tournament history, becoming the first team in FIFA World Cup history to benefit from an own goal in consecutive matches.
Freeman Extends the Legacy
Just before the halftime whistle, the Americans doubled their advantage through a historic individual milestone.
Midfielder Malik Tillman drew a foul 30 yards out near the right endline. Robinson took the set-piece but skipped a pass out to Sergiño Dest near the edge of the box. Dest, who spent the afternoon making Australian defenders dizzy, unleashed a heavy strike that took a massive deflection off a defender and looped straight up into the air.
As the ball dropped right into the six-yard box, 21-year-old right back Alex Freeman out-jumped a sprawling Patrick Beach to nod home his first career World Cup goal. Freeman—son of Super Bowl XXXI champion wide receiver Antonio Freeman—now stands as the third-youngest American goalscorer in World Cup history.

A Defensive Masterclass
Up 2-0, the second half was an exhibition of defensive suffocating. Led by center-back Chris Richards, who put together an astonishing statistical performance by completing 91 of 95 total pass attempts, the U.S. completely choked out the Australian counterattack.
Goalkeeper Matt Freese was rarely tested, coasting behind a backline that secured the team’s first World Cup clean sheet in ten matches.

- 43rd Minute: USA – Alex Freeman | Assists: Sergiño Dest
Pochettino’s Praise
The tactical mastery of Mauricio Pochettino was clearly visible, as his aggressive tactical adjustments outclassed Australia’s compact low block.
“I think it was a fantastic game, a very good first half,” a beaming Pochettino remarked as the Seattle crowd chanted his name. “We have amazing fans, and I think we are matching Argentina with our fan energy. I am so happy for them.”
The USMNT will travel down the West Coast to Los Angeles, where they will conclude group play against Türkiye on June 25 at SoFi Stadium, with the top spot in Group D officially on the line.
