The postseason has officially arrived. This afternoon in Vestal, New York, the America East baseball tournament gets underway at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. The action kicks off with a high-stakes, win-or-go-home doubleheader. The two opening-round survivors will advance to the double-elimination portion of the event, joining the top-seeded Binghamton Bearcats and the second-seeded UMBC Retrievers on Thursday.
All roads lead to the championship finals, which are locked in for Saturday, May 23. Here is everything you need to know ahead of the opening pitch.
Game 1 (1:00 PM): No. 4 Bryant vs. No. 5 UMass Lowell
The tournament opens with a classic conference rivalry. Bryant holds a narrow 13–10 edge in the all-time series against UMass Lowell, which includes a regular-season sweep of the River Hawks back on April 24–26 in Lowell. These two programs have split their two previous postseason meetings: UMass Lowell secured a 6–0 single-elimination shutout in 2023, while Bryant countered with an 8–4 win in 2024 to jumpstart their championship run.
The Scouting Report
No. 4 Bryant Bulldogs (27-24, 13-16 over their last 29 games):
- Speed Kills: The Bulldogs are a menace on the base paths, leading the league with 61 stolen bases in conference play (61-of-69 attempts). Overall, they have swiped 145 bases, tying Northeastern for the most in league history. They rank 8th nationally, averaging 2.84 stolen bases per game.
- Control the Zone: Bryant’s pitching staff boasts a combined 4.76 ERA and leads the conference in fewest walks allowed (92). Opposing batters are hitting just .254 against them, the second-best mark in the America East.
- Tournament Record: 6–3 all-time in the AE tournament.
No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks:
- Postseason Pedigree: This marks UML’s sixth tournament appearance since joining the conference, and their second under head coach Nick Barese.
- High-Hit Contingency: The River Hawks’ offense thrives on volume, logging 10+ hits in 21 different games this spring (holding a 10–11 record in those contests). They rank third in the league with a .279 team batting average.
- The National Leader: Senior third baseman Joseph DeLanzo is the toughest hitter in the entire country to punch out, striking out just 8 times in 176 at-bats to lead the nation.
- On the Bump: Wednesday’s probable starter, Alfred Mucciarone, ranks 12th nationally with two complete games. He leads the conference with 69.2 innings pitched and carries a 4.52 ERA (9th in the league).
- Defense: UML enters the week ranked fifth in the conference with a .965 fielding percentage.
Game 2 (5:00 PM): No. 3 Maine vs. No. 6 UAlbany
The nightcap features two teams that are incredibly familiar with one another. The Maine Black Bears and UAlbany Great Danes just wrapped up a three-game regular-season finale last weekend, which saw Maine complete a dominant three-game sweep. Maine holds the historical upper hand, carrying a 45–25 modern record and a 52–29 all-time series advantage against the Great Danes.
The Scouting Report
No. 3 Maine Black Bears:
- Defensive Cleanliness: The Black Bears are the sharpest defensive unit in the conference, leading the league with a stellar .975 fielding percentage.
- The Power & The Punch: Trey Carpenter anchors the lineup, sitting tied for the conference lead in home runs (14) while also leading in strikeouts (59).
- Ace on the Mound: Wednesday’s expected starter, Jason Krueger, leads the America East with 82.1 innings pitched. Krueger owns a 4.37 ERA and has racked up 48 strikeouts (7th in the league).
- The Door Slammer: If Maine has a late lead, closer Sebastian Holt is tied for the conference lead with 5 saves.
No. 6 UAlbany Great Danes:
- Deceptive Metrics: Do not let UAlbany’s 6.77 team ERA or sixth-ranked .253 batting average fool you. They feature arguably the most dangerous one-two starting pitching punch in the conference.
- The 1-2 Punch: Matthew Mariano (3.41 ERA) and Dylan Banner (3.94 ERA) rank 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the conference ERA standings. Banner is second in the league with 63 strikeouts and has three complete games to his credit, while Mariano is tied for third in the league with 5 wins.
- Late-inning execution: Closer Jamison Walsh has successfully locked down two saves this year, and the team isn’t afraid to manufacture runs, ranking in the middle of the pack with 51 stolen bases.
America East Weekly Honors
The final week of regular-season awards sets the stage for the individual talent on display this weekend:
AE Player of the Week: Juju Stevens (Maine)
Stevens turned in a monster 4–0 week for the Black Bears, batting .305 with 9 RBIs, 8 runs scored, 5 hits, and a massive .923 slugging percentage. In the weekend series against UAlbany alone, Stevens went 4-for-9 with 5 runs and 8 RBIs.
AE Pitcher of the Week: Jason Krueger (Maine)
Krueger earned the nod after a masterful complete-game performance in a 12–1 victory over UAlbany. He threw a 7-inning distance game in the opener of a twin bill, facing 29 batters without issuing a single walk, allowing just two hits, one run, and striking out six. He held Great Dane hitters to a microscopic .087 batting average.
AE Rookie of the Week: Dylan Melton (UMBC)
Melton helped the second-seeded Retrievers lock up their first-round bye by hitting .529 and slugging .600 during a 3–1 week. His highlight performance came in a 12–4 rout of NJIT, where he went 4-for-5 with two doubles and 3 RBIs.
The single-elimination fun officially gets underway today at 1:00 PM.
