As of late December 2025, the mid-major landscape is surprisingly top-heavy, featuring a mix of perennial powerhouses and undefeated newcomers ready to wreck brackets.

If they navigate the MAC schedule unscathed, they could be looking at a single-digit seed in March.
2. The Analytics Darling: McNeese State
The Cowboys (10-2) are a nightmare matchup for Power Five schools. They currently rank 2nd in the nation in turnover margin (+8.1) and 3rd in steals per game. Coach Will Wade has built a “fastbreak factory” that scores 22 points per game in transition. They have a massive “litmus test” scheduled for December 29 against #2 Michigan.
3. The Ivy League Juggernaut: Yale
While Princeton has struggled this year (3-11), Yale has stepped up to carry the mantle of the Ivy League. At 11-1, the Bulldogs are a disciplined, veteran group that rarely beats themselves. They currently hold the #2 spot in the Mid-Major polls and are projected as a 12-seed that no 5-seed will want to see.
4. The WAC Power: Grand Canyon
Bryce Drew has turned Grand Canyon (8-4) into a destination program. Led by senior guard Jaden Henley (17.8 PPG), the Antelopes have one of the most hostile home-court advantages in college basketball. They recently dismantled Wyoming and IU Indianapolis, proving their defense is ready for postseason play.
