Aliquippa Quips Report

WPIAL Championships (20) | PIAA Championships (5)
Class 4A Championship: #7 Aliquippa Quips (8-3) at #1 McKeesport Tigers (9-3)
Venue: Pine-Richland High School
After being humbled at home by the Montour Spartans 34-20 in week eight, it appeared as if the season was over for the Aliquippa Quips. Their quarterback, Marques Council, was thought to have a season ending injury weeks before, and without any type of threat passing, the Quips looked cooked.
After dispatching Ambridge in the season finale, Aliquippa was selected to play in the WPIAL 4A Playoffs, but in an unfamiliar role as a wildcard… and an underdog when they faced Trinity in the first round.
To the surprise of Trinity– and the rest of the WPIAL, Council returned to action, and all he did was lead the Quips to a 21-14 victory over the #2 ranked Hillers.
Last week, the Quips had a revenge match-up against New Castle, who defeated Aliquippa 18-12 when Council was out.
This time the Hurricanes weren’t so fortunate. JJ Work and Avery Coleman had rushing touchdowns as the Quips pitched a shout-out in a 14-0 victory over New Castle.
During the regular season Council had passed for 983 yards, nine touchdowns, four interceptions, and rushed for 190 yards.
Josh Lay led the team with 27 catches for 457 yards and one touchdown. Qa’Lil Goode is 2nd on the team with 18 receptions for 383 yards, adding 128 yards rushing and 10 total touchdowns.
J.J. Work has rushed for 653 yards and eight touchdowns.
McKeesport quarterback Matthew Miller has passed for 786 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He’s also rushed for 221 yards and six touchdowns.
Javien Robinson is the leading receiver with 16 receptions for 317 yards and five touchdowns.
The Tigers, though, live and breathe with Kemon Spell, the #1 ranked running back in the country. Spell has rushed for 1,263 yards and 27 touchdowns overall. He also caught five passes for 111 yards.
McKeesport defeated Chartiers Valley and Thomas Jefferson en route to the title game.
Winner of this game claims the WPIAL 4A Championship and heads into the PIAA State Playoffs.
