The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter 2026 looking for a bounce-back season. Tampa Bay finished 8-9 last year and missed the playoffs. The Bucs also endured a brutal second half. They lost seven of their final nine games after their bye. Now, Tampa Bay hopes to regain control of the NFC South. The team still has plenty of offensive talent. However, several major changes create legitimate questions. Mike Evans left after 12 seasons with the franchise. Lavonte David also retired during the offseason. Despite those losses, I expect Tampa Bay to improve. My prediction calls for a 10-7 record and another NFC South title.
Baker Mayfield Must Lead the Way
Baker Mayfield remains the most important player on the roster. He enters 2026 looking to rebound from an inconsistent 2025 campaign. Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards last season. He also completed 63.2 percent of his passes. His second-half numbers created even more concern. He threw nine interceptions across his final nine games. Injuries also affected Mayfield throughout the season. He dealt with knee, shoulder, and arm issues. Still, Tampa Bay continues to view Mayfield as its franchise quarterback. General manager Jason Licht reaffirmed that commitment this month. Mayfield also enters the final year of his current contract. That situation adds another storyline to the season. Therefore, Mayfield has plenty of motivation entering 2026.
Zac Robinson Brings a New Offense
Tampa Bay hired Zac Robinson as its new offensive coordinator. Robinson previously held that position with Atlanta. He also spent several seasons with Sean McVay’s Rams. That experience should bring some new ideas to Tampa Bay. Robinson’s Atlanta offenses ranked inside the NFL’s top ten in several categories. Those areas included rushing and passing production. More importantly, Robinson has a strong relationship with Mayfield. That connection could help the transition. The new offense should also feature more wide-zone concepts. Tampa Bay wants to create better running lanes for its backs. That approach could benefit Bucky Irving significantly.
Bucky Irving Could Become a Star
Irving enters his third NFL season with plenty of expectations. The young running back gives Tampa Bay an explosive weapon. He should receive plenty of opportunities in Robinson’s offense. The Bucs also added Kenneth Gainwell during the offseason. That gives Tampa Bay another experienced option in the backfield. The team wants more consistency from its rushing attack. A stronger running game would help Mayfield tremendously. It could also keep opposing defenses from sitting on passing downs. Furthermore, the offensive line remains a major strength. Tristan Wirfs, Graham Barton, and Luke Goedeke headline the current group. If that group stays healthy, Tampa Bay should move the football.
The Receiving Corps Must Replace Evans
Replacing Evans will not prove easy. He spent 12 seasons as Tampa Bay’s premier receiving threat. However, the Bucs still have plenty of talent. Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, and Emeka Egbuka lead the receiver group. Egbuka enters his second season after arriving as a first-round pick. McMillan also enters another important season. The Bucs added Georgia State receiver Ted Hurst during the draft. He brings legitimate downfield ability to the offense. Cade Otton also remains an important part of the passing game. Therefore, Tampa Bay should not suddenly become an average offense. The group simply needs to replace Evans’ consistency.
The Defense Has Questions Too
Todd Bowles enters his fifth season as Tampa Bay’s head coach. He previously served as the team’s defensive coordinator. The defense will look different without David. However, Tampa Bay added veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone. Vita Vea also remains a crucial defensive centerpiece. The Buccaneers agreed to a one-year, $30 million extension with him Thursday. The deal moves one major concern before the season. Tampa Bay also drafted edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. with the 15th overall pick. The Bucs hope he can provide an immediate pass-rushing boost. Calijah Kancey and Yaya Diaby also provide important young talent. If the pass rush improves, Tampa Bay’s defense could surprise.
The Schedule Will Test Tampa Bay
The schedule creates several difficult challenges. Tampa Bay opens the season against Cincinnati on September 13. The Bucs then host Cleveland and Minnesota. Green Bay follows before Tampa Bay travels to Dallas. That Cowboys matchup comes Thursday night. Tampa Bay also travels to Chicago for Sunday Night Football. The Bucs receive their bye during Week 10. They then travel to Detroit after the break. Tampa Bay also faces both Los Angeles teams at home. The Chargers and Rams could provide two difficult tests. Baltimore also awaits on the road. Still, Tampa Bay avoids a first-place schedule this year. The team finished second in the NFC South last season. That gives the Bucs a slightly better setup.
The NFC South Remains Wide Open
The division could become another four-team battle. Carolina won the NFC South last season after finishing 8-9. Tampa Bay finished with the same record. The Panthers won the tiebreaker and claimed the division. Atlanta and New Orleans also remain capable of causing problems. However, Tampa Bay has enough experience to win the division. The Bucs also have a favorable home schedule. That advantage could prove important late in the season. The key will involve divisional games. Tampa Bay needs to avoid another collapse against familiar opponents.
My 2026 Buccaneers Prediction
I predict Tampa Bay will finish 10-7 during the regular season. I expect the Bucs to start around .500. The early schedule includes several challenging opponents. However, Tampa Bay should find its rhythm as Robinson’s offense develops. Mayfield should also become more comfortable within the new system. I expect Tampa Bay to beat Cleveland and Minnesota at home. Green Bay will present a much tougher challenge. The Dallas game could go either way. I expect the Bucs to split their games against Chicago and Detroit. The NFC South games should determine the final standings. I expect Tampa Bay to finish with a strong divisional record. That should put the Bucs in position to win the division. A 10-7 record could secure another playoff appearance.
The Biggest Key to Success
Health could determine everything for Tampa Bay. The Bucs struggled with injuries throughout last season. The offensive line especially needs better luck. Mayfield also needs to remain healthy throughout the season. Furthermore, Tampa Bay needs its young defenders to develop quickly. Bain could provide the pass rush this defense desperately needs. Meanwhile, Vea gives the interior defense a powerful anchor. The offense also needs better balance. If Irving becomes a consistent feature back, Robinson’s system could thrive.
The Final Verdict
I expect the Buccaneers to return to the playoffs in 2026. However, I do not expect another deep postseason run yet. The team has too many new pieces and unanswered questions. Still, Tampa Bay has enough veteran talent to win the NFC South. Mayfield remains the biggest reason for optimism. Robinson could also give the offense a much-needed spark. Meanwhile, Vea’s new deal keeps a defensive cornerstone in Tampa. The young talent could make the defense even better. The current market lists Tampa Bay’s win total at 8.5. Several analysts view the team as a borderline playoff contender. I am more optimistic than the market. My final prediction: Tampa Bay finishes 10-7, wins the NFC South, and reaches the playoffs. The next step will require Mayfield and the young roster to deliver in January.
