Women’s Soccer
Women’s soccer has had a similar story to the men’s team. As the women’s team have not won since September 13th. However, the lady Pioneers have kept every game closing, with two resulting in a tie. First, the Pioneers hosted Chatham University and were down 1-0 until a Katie Heighberger PK kick resulted in a goal to tie the game 1-1. Versus Mount St. Joseph, Shelby Carr got her first goal of the season with an assist from Dilyn Hunley. However, the Cougars quickly tied the game and in the second half scored the game winner for a 2-1 Pioneer loss.
Marietta fell to Wooster being outshot 20 to 8, although Francesca Agliolo performed well keeping the game to only a 1-0 loss. Agliolo was perfect vs Oberlin College, however, so was Oberlin goalkeeper Roam Redington as the game ended in a scoreless draw.
This weekend Marietta hosted Ohio Northern in their first conference game of the season. However, much like versus Oberlin, the Pioneers and the Polar Bears fought to a scoreless draw. Agliolo saved 8 while Ohio Northern saved 5 in the 0-0 draw. This tie put the Pioneers at a 3-3-5 record on the season.
Next the Pioneers play Otterbein University in Westerville on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team has struggled in late September with their last win coming on September 10th versus Mount St. Joseph. The team sits at 3-7-2. The Pioneers got shut out 3-0 by Case Western before drawing with Allegheny College 2-2. Marietta played well versus #1 Denison University keeping the game 0-1 until the last two minutes when scored again to win 2-0. While Parker Bolin added his eleventh goal of the season, the Pioneers lost their last game of September 3-1, which was versus Ohio Wesleyan University.
This weekend at Ohio Northern the team was shutout as they lost 1-0. Their next matchup is home versus Otterbein on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Volleyball
Marietta College fell to their ranked opponents during the Hope College September Tournament. The hosting #18 Hope Flying Dutchmen stormed off with a 25-13 win; Marietta was able to come back and win the second set 25-21. Unfortunately, the Dutchmen stayed ahead finishing off the Pios 25-14 and 25-17.
Versus #7 Illinois Wesleyan the Pioneers were swept 3-0. They made a late run in the first set but ultimately lost 25-20. And the tough weekend ended with a 25-15 and 25-16 loss to the Titans.
This past weekend the Pios were able to regain their momentum versus Ohio Northern. Marietta hosted Ohio Northern in their first conference game of the season. The Pios swept the Polar Bears in the BanJo winning 25-18, 25-23, and 25-19. This improved the Pioneers to 10-4 on the season.
Volleyballs next game is versus Otterbein University in Westerville on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Football
A walk-off 30-yard field goal scored the Pioneers the victory on the road versus Capital. As a result, kicker Nathaniel Demuth was announced as OAC Special Teams Player of the Week. As a team QB Antwon Johnson went 14/29 for 146 yards and a touchdown in the third. Which was caught by Chrys Taylor in his first game for the Pioneers. Vante’ Hodges kicked off the game with a 75-yard rushing touchdown, his fifth of the season. Sophomore Benny Lewis made an impact in the game rushing 25 times for 92 yards.
On Saturday, the Pioneers faced Ohio Northern on the road and suffered their first loss of the season. Ohio Northern scored in the first off an interception. Which the Pios responded with a field goal. However, the Polar Bears dominated the second quarter rushing for two touchdowns and passing for one.
The Marietta defense was unable to stop the Polar Bears as they did not punt at all in the second half. ONU added two more touchdowns in the second half. While Zion Jackson-Willborn earned his first rushing touchdown of the season in relief for ‘Vonte Hodges who did not play for the Pioneers. This ended the game with a final score of 42-9, dropping Marietta to a 3-1 record.
Antwon Johnson went 14/25 with three interceptions in Ada. As a result, sophomore Joe Tenta, grandson of WWE Superstar Earthquake, was brought in and kept possession but completed 4/11.
Next Saturday Marietta hosts Heidelberg University at 2:30 p.m. in Don Drumm Stadium.
Golf
Marietta had their best performance of the season last weekend at the Franciscan Fall Invitational. The Men’s team won the invitational with a team score of 303, 15 strokes over par. They were 8 strokes ahead of second place Saint Vincent (311), followed by Washington & Jefferson (312), Muskingum (313), Grove City (315), Geneva (332), and La Roche (347). Marietta did not win the individual title however, freshmen Aidan Houghton finished one over par at 73 for third place and Carson Moore carded a 75 for fifth place.
The women’s team were able to finish in third place of the seven schools with a team score of (376). They were behind Heidelberg (367) and champion Washington & Jefferson who carded a 331. The Pioneers top players tied for ninth overall as Madelyn Ebersbach and Addison Jackson finished with a 92.
The women’s team played in the OAC preview this weekend while the men’s team will play in the OAC preview next weekend.
