Halfway through the season, the Washington Wild Things’ roster adjustments have paid off. After their first month of play, they sit in second place in their division. Now they are atop the central division at 26-19. However, they still have three more months of baseball to win their first Frontier League Championship in Pennsylvania.
At the end of May, the Wild Things were 12-9. A half game behind the 12-8 Lake Erie Crushers. Washington’s next series came on June 3rd against the Joliet Slammers, whom they had lost to in their previous series. In game one, they battled into extra innings. Outfielder Jeff Liquori hit a walk-off for the Wild Things to win 8-7. And with Erie losing, that gave Washington the division lead.
However, in their next gam, Washington was shut out and lost 1-0. Rain would postpone their next two games, and they’d move onto their first series with Evansville. On the road, the Otters took game two 6-3, and Washington split the shortened series, winning game three 9-3.

After this series, the Wild Things hired a new pitching coach. Washington brought in Hector Nelo as the new pitching coach in January. However, the former AA baseball player did not mesh well with the organization, leaving in late May. His replacement came as former Wild Thing Lukas Young. Young played for the team from 2022-2024. He had retired young due to injury. But being a former teammate to many players on the team brings familiarity and comfort to the clubhouse.
This move appeared to pay off as they won their next two series against teams they had struggled against previously. First against the Schaumburg Boomers, the Wild Things went 2-1. They won 5-4 and 12-1 but lost 5-2. Next against Joliet, they lost game one 12-2, but won three straight, winning 4-3, 8-7, and 6-4.
On the road, Washington struggled defensively against Evansville. The Otters took games one and two 12-3 and 15-12. However, during the doubleheader, Washington prevailed. They split the series, winning 1-0 and 8-6.
Washington’s streak over the Florence Y’alls continued. They won their 3rd straight series over them. They won 3-2, lost 18-11, then won 9-5.
In the final week of Jun, the Washington met the Crushers. Here, Washington lost the first of the month. Erie won games one and three, 6-2 and 7-2. On the other hand, Washington won game two 5-4.
Washington bounced back and won the final series of the month over the Schaumburg Boomers. They took game one 10-5, lost game two 8-5, and won the finale 9-3. This win put the Wild Things at 14-10 in June and 26-19 overall.
Washington is 3.5 games ahead of the Crushers, who are 21-21. The Crushers struggled this month when they played the Atlantic Conference, losing all three series they played in.
In the Midwest Conference, Washington is 3rd overall, half a game behind the 26-18 Gateway Grizzlies and one game behind the 27-18 Boomers.
Washington’s next series comes with Gateway starting on July 1st. Then they have three more series before the All-Star break that starts on July 14th. To keep up with the Wild Things, visit them at Schedule | Official Website of The Washington Wild Things.
