This week in MLB featured more injuries, the San Francisco Giants’ roster shakeup, and the Craig Kimbrel reunion with the Atlanta Braves.
Corbin Burnes to undergo Tommy-John surgery –
Arizona Diamondbacks starter Corbin Burnes will undergo Tommy John surgery. Brutal loss for the D-backs in his first year of a six-year, $210 million contract.

Last weekend, Corbin Burnes left his start vs the Washington Nationals early after appearing to injure his elbow. On Friday, the worst possible outcome was confirmed, and Burnes will miss the remainder of the 2025 season.
The former Cy-Young winner was pitching well to start the season with a 2.72 ERA with 57 K in 59.2 IP.
Burnes, 30, signed a massive six-year, $210 million contract with Arizona this past offseason as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2024 campaign after making a Cinderella World Series run in 2023. The Diamondbacks currently sit at 31-34, 7.5 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
Luke Weaver to miss around 4-6 weeks with hamstring injury –
New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver is expected be placed on the injured list after injuring his hamstring warming up Sunday night, sources tell ESPN. Weaver underwent an MRI and could miss four to six weeks, though the official timetable will be determined Tuesday.

The Yankees’ closer was warming up in the bullpen last Sunday and felt something in his hamstring. He did not enter the game, and it was later revealed he suffered a hamstring strain.
Weaver was placed on the injured list Tuesday, but received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured left hamstring to help speed up his recovery.
The righthander was off to a strong start to the season, pitching to a 1.05 ERA with 24 K in 25.2 IP.
Devin Williams, the Yankees’ big offseason trade acquisition, will take over closer duties while Weaver is on the shelf. Williams began the season, but lost the job to Weaver earlier in the season.
Bryce Harper placed on IL with wrist inflammation –
The Phillies placed superstar 1B Bryce Harper on the IL Saturday with right wrist inflammation. This is the same wrist injury that Harper dealt with last season.
“It’s gotten to the point where I can’t really function on a baseball field or hit a baseball or anything like that,” Harper said. “So, it’s just a good time for me to take some time and get it right.”
Harper has had a down season by his standards, slashing .258/.368/.446 with 9 HR in 57 games.
The Phillies have now lost five games in a row, and 10 of their last 13. They sit 4.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets.
Giants shake up roster, trade LaMonte Wade Jr. to Angels –
The #SFGiants made the following roster moves today:

• IF LaMonte Wade Jr. and C Sam Huff designated for assignment.
• IF/OF Dominic Smith signed to a one-year Major League contract.
• OF Daniel Johnson…— SFGiants (@SFGiants) June 4, 2025
The San Francisco Giants shook up their roster in a big way Wednesday. The biggest name involved was longtime first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr.
Wade struggled mightily to begin the season, slashing .167/.275/.271 with only 1 HR in 50 games, posting a -1.1 WAR (Wins Above Replacement). He was designated for assignment and ultimately traded to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
The rest of the roster moves included sending INF Christian Koss to Triple-A Sacramento, designating C Sam Huff, signing veteran 1B Dom Smith, and recalling OF Daniel Johnson and C Andrew Knizner.
The Giants have now won five straight games.
Braves recall Kimbrel, DFA him –
The Atlanta Braves needed a new arm on Friday to eat some innings, and RHP Craig Kimbrel seemed like the perfect guy.

— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) June 7, 2025
Kimbrel, 37, signed a minor league contract with the Braves for the 2025 season. He began his MLB career in Atlanta from 2010 to 2014, becoming one of the most dominant closers in the game. Throughout his time in Atlanta, Kimbrel pitched to a 1.43 ERA with 467 K in 289 IP with 186 SV.
Kimbrel pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Friday night’s loss to the Giants and was promptly DFA’d the next morning.
The #Braves today recalled LHP Austin Cox to Atlanta and designated RHP Craig Kimbrel for assignment.

This move has been met with much criticism from the fans and media, who say that the Braves treated a franchise icon with immense disrespect.
