Baseball and the Toast Man are back in West Virginia. The Charleston Dirty Birds kicked off action in April, with the Toast Man toasting opponents at home games. The Dirty Birds have a new attitude this season, as they look to make the playoffs again in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB). Currently, the club sits at 17-16. But how do the Dirty Birds stack amongst their competitors?
While the Birds have had a stronger start than usual, their season has had a cold start. Their season kicked off on the road against their rival, the Lexington Legends. Here, the Legends smacked the Dirty Birds and took 3 straight wins.
The next challenger for the Birds was the Blue Crabs. They faced off in a six-game series, with the first half in Charleston. The Toast Man must’ve been good luck for the Birds as they won the first two games to end April. However, on May 1st, they lost game three. On the road, the Crabs took 2 of 3 to win the series.
The following week, they played the Legends once again. This time at GoMart Park. The Birds got a 4-0 shutout in Game 1. The Birds’ pitching stayed steady at home, but they lost by one run in both games two and three. Similar results occurred against the Blue Crabs as Charleston took game two 7-2 but lost games one and three by one run each.
Sitting at 5-10, West Virginia’s morale was low. The season appeared to be essentially over. Apparently, all the Dirty Birds needed was a change of momentum. The Staten Island Ferry Hawks traveled to Charleston. This marked the Dirty Birds’ first inter-divisional series. Charleston took game one 7-3 and game two 7-5. However, Staten Island took game three 9-2.
Nonetheless, this series win changed their momentum in mid-May. Their next game came at home against Southern Maryland. The Dirty Birds packed a broom as they swept the Blue Crabs.

Another new opponent walked into the Toast Man’s arena. When the High Point Rockers battled the Dirty Birds. However, High Point’s offense overwhelmed the Birds. Rockers took game one 8-2 and game two 12-4. Charleston won their first-ever Thursday game, beating the Rockers 7-2 in game three.
A rematch with High Point followed the next week, with GoMart Park seeing a similar result. Rockers took game one 5-0 and game three 6-2. Charleston took game two 7-1.
Back on the road in Lexington, the Dirty Birds’ new attitude thrived as they won close games with the Legends. Charleston took game one 3-1, while Lexington took game two 5-4. But Charleston won their first series over their rival, winning game three 4-2.
After losing to High Point, the Dirty Birds did the unthinkable. The Toast Man celebrated with the fans as the Birds swept the Legends. The roster clutched up winning 7-6, 11-4, and 3-2.
This final sweep ended the month of May with a 17-16 record. This tied the Blue Crabs for second in the division. Close behind are the Legends, sitting at 16-17. Although far ahead are the Rockers with a 25-8 record.
The Dirty Birds’ next match is with the aforementioned Rockers in High Point. GoMart Park and the Toast Man will be back in action on June 10th as the Birds host the Long Island Ducks.
