Just like in all college football, high school also has spring practice and a game. For the Pinellas Park Patriots, that was just this past Friday. This game was great to watch because the team is going through a lot of changes. The first is within the coaching staff, as two of the assistants from 2024 have gone on to head coaching jobs in different counties. After interviewing head coach Max Smith, he said that he tries to get his assistant coaches a promotion so that they can move on. He also works to make sure his players can go off to college. He also made a very nice speech at the end of the year at a football banquet. The crowd was good, as most of them were parents of the players who were playing in the game.
As the game started, the offensive line was working on drills in the end zone. While that was going on, the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers were also running drills in the middle of the field. The game started after Coach Smith blew his whistle. After the interview with Coach Smith, he said that he gave the responsibility of calling plays to his assistants. I also believe the same thing occurred at the USF Bulls Spring football game. USF’s head coach Alex Golesh stood behind the plays as they were happening, that is where coach Smith was also standing. The team has focused on running the ball well during the past few seasons. During the spring game, they were mostly in shotgun formation and threw the ball many times.

Many of the players from last year’s team graduated or have gone to college. This game showed off what the junior varsity team had last year, and players who have transferred from other schools. Interviewing players after the game, I got to meet all levels of the players who will be featured on this year’s team. The game was good; it was back and forth and showed what the Pinellas Park Patriots could be on both sides of the ball, as both sides had players graduate. It’s time for the next man up, and both sides showed promise.
The offense had drives that ended with touchdowns and made big plays to get to those scores. The defense had many sacks and turnovers. It shows that the defense can get after the quarterback, which will result in more turnovers and stop the other team from longer drives. The quarterback will be one of the biggest positions that will undergo major change. The two who played in the game showed what they brought to the position. As the game concluded, Coach Smith brought all his players in the middle of the field, and he talked with them. This upcoming Friday, they will travel to Boca Ciega High School to play against the Pirates. We will see what comes of the Spring Game versus the Pirates.
