In what is the most unexpected move of the 2024-25 NBA season, Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has been traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. First broken by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the blockbuster trade goes as follows:
Los Angeles Lakers Receive:
- Luka Doncic
- Maxi Kleber
- Markieff Morris
Dallas Mavericks Receive:
- Anthony Davis
- Max Christie
- 2029 LAL 1st round pick
Utah Jazz Receive:
- Jalen Hood-Schifino
- 2025 Los Angeles Clippers 2nd round pick
- 2025 Dallas Mavericks 2nd round
In this absolutely stunning move, the Los Angeles Lakers receive one of the best point guards in the game in Luka Doncic. In his seventh season, Doncic is averaging 28.1 PPG, 8.3 RPG, and 7.8 APG. Currently sidelined with an injury that’s had him out since Christmas Day, Doncic is expected to return in February. The trade pairs Doncic with LeBron James, as the two could form one of the scariest duos in the league.
In this trade, the Lakers will part ways with Anthony Davis, who not only helped the team win the 2020 NBA championship but was looking like an MVP and DPOY contender this year. In a statement from Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, he would explain the decision to trade Doncic for Anthony Davis:
“I believe that defense wins championships. I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future. “
For Dallas, they pair Davis with Kyrie Irving, who is having a strong season despite the injury trouble. Currently averaging, 25.7 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 3.4 APG, and 2.1 BPG, Davis has proven to be effective on both ends of the court this season. The team also receives the Lakers’ 2029 first-round draft pick that could become highly valuable by 2029.
In the immediate aftermath of the trade, reports have come out that Doncic did not request a trade from the Mavericks and that Dallas approached the Lakers about Doncic, offering him for Davis.
The Utah Jazz would play a minor role in the trade, taking on Jalen Hood-Schifino, and receiving a couple of second-round picks for helping facilitate the trade.
The blockbuster trade caused a major shift in the Western Conference, even though some may argue the trade could be near equal. As of February 2nd, the Los Angeles Lakers sit 28-19, 5th in the Western Conference, while the Mavericks sit at 26-23, 8th in the West. While fans will have to wait to see the debut of Doncic and James together, the pairing of Davis and Irving will likely be on the court together soon.
