The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
Through mid-December, the Pittsburgh Steelers were rolling along at 10-3 and had the look of a team that could go deep into the playoffs.
Pittsburgh had built a two game cushion on Baltimore, with aspirations of winning the AFC North Division title and an outside shot at the #1 seed.
Then it all came crashing down.
Three consecutive losses to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Kansas City, by a combined score of 90-40, have left the Steelers a game behind Baltimore with one game remaining in the regular season.
To rub salt in the wound, the Ravens now control their destiny to win the North, if they can defeat Cleveland on Saturday afternoon, a game that Baltimore is 20 point favorites in.
The Steelers (10-6) host the red hot Cincinnati Bengals (8-8) on Saturday night at Acrisure Stadium. If Baltimore loses, Pittsburgh will win the division with a win over the Bengals and host a playoff game as the #3 seed. If the Ravens do as expected, then a Steelers win will send them to Houston as the #5 seed in the Wild Card. A loss by Pittsburgh, combined with a LA Chargers win over the Raiders, will drop them to the #6 seed, and a trip to Baltimore will await them next weekend.
The Bengals need to win this game, and hope both Miami and Denver lose their games to get in.
The last time these two teams met, the Steelers outlasted Cincinnati 44-38 in a thrilling game in which Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 414 yards and three touchdowns.
The Bengals offense is even hotter than they were in that game, now 6th in the NFL scoring 28.3 points per game.
Joe Burrow, is 1st in the NFL across the board with 4,641 yards passing and 42 touchdowns, with just eight interceptions. He’s been sacked 44 times.
He’s on a record streak of eight consecutive games with at least 250 passing yards and three touchdowns.
“He’s been unbelievable,” said Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. “But I think the thing is, the guy has been unbelievable all year. I just think they haven’t won as many games, and so he doesn’t get the credit that he probably deserves. But this guy, he’s unbelievable. He’s going to make all the throws. And we’ve got to do a good job of trying to defend him, mix it up, make it hard for him. But he is playing at an MVP level, there’s no doubt about it, and we’re going to have our work cut out getting things together this week.”
Burrow’s main receiving weapons are the dynamic duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
Chase leads the league with 117 receptions for 1,1612 yards, and 16 touchdowns, while Higgins has caught 69 passes for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns, despite playing in only 11 games this year.
Andrei Iosivas is the 3rd option at receiver, and has caught 34 passes for 467 yards and six scores.
Tight end Mike Gesicki, in his first year as a Bengal, is 3rd on the team with 57 catches for 597 yards and two touchdowns.
Chase Brown has been a beast as the Bengals primary back, rushing for 990 yards and seven touchdowns, while catching 54 passes for 360 yards and four more touchdowns.
Brown was injured late in the game against Denver, so Khalil Herbert may see the majority of the touches. In seven games as a Bengal, he’s rushed for just 45 yards.
The Pittsburgh defense, without a doubt, have their work cut out for them in trying to keep this high powered Bengals offense contained. Over the past month, the defense has been plagued by injuries, miscommunication issues, and poor tackling.
“I feel like we all want to get that bad taste out of our mouths,” said cornerback Joey Porter Jr.. “Going into this, this is a very personal game for all of us. We are taking this game very seriously, like every weekend. We are just trying to show everybody we know how to play defense.”
The highest paid defense in the league has had a December in which they allowed 376.6 yards and 28.4 points per game.
“Teams are scheming us,” safety Minkah Fitzpatrick said. “They’re knowing we’re having some issues with motions, stacks and bunches. If you look at stuff we’ve been beat on or when guys are running open, it’s stuff that each team got from the last team. We made real big emphasis this week on those style of plays and even plays that can stem off from it, working on communication, everyone being on the same page and playing fast ball.”
Frustrations have boiled over, and a lot of bickering and finger pointing have taken over the locker room the past week.
“When you’ve got lot of guys in a room who care about something and we’re not all in agreement, there is going to be conflict. There is going to be tension,” Fitzpatrick said. “Everybody has a strong personality. Everybody cares a lot. Everybody gives a lot to this team and organization. When you’ve got a lot of guys in the room that move that way and we aren’t seeing the success we want to see, there’s going to be tension.
“The important thing is after you have that conflict and those confrontations, that you ask each other what are we going to do differently. Not because of the confrontation but because of what caused it. Conflict, bickering, all that stuff is going to happen in a locker room. The important thing is to have a solution as to why.”
As potent as the Bengals offense is, their defense is awful, allowing 26.1 points per game, which is 28th in the NFL.
Wilson and the offense will try to get back on track against a team they torched for 520 total yards.
Costly turnovers and drive killing penalties have plagued this offense over the past three games.
No matter what Baltimore does, if this team plans on turning it around and gaining some type of momentum heading into the playoffs, it starts when the ball is kicked off at 8:00 PM, Saturday night.
Wilson will have a healthy George Pickens as his main weapon in the passing game, as well as tight end Pat Freiermuth.
Calvin Austin III is best utilized as a #3 in this league, but guys like him, Van Jefferson, and Mike Williams will have to elevate their games when called upon. Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek play with heart, but the talent isn’t there.
Rookie 3rd round pick Roman Wilson has practiced fully over the past two weeks, but Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin refuses to use him, and is out once again in this game.
The duo of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren could be in line for a big game against a Bengals run defense that is giving up 128 yards a game (21st) on the ground.
It’s going to be a typical AFC North game.
Both teams have something at stake here, but the Bengals seemingly need a miracle, while the Steelers have this game to cure all the problems that have hampered them lately before the playoffs begin next weekend.
Pittsburgh has the more complete team, but if they play as they have the last three outings, they will get embarrassed again, and be looking at an epic collapse to end their year.
As ugly as this team has been since mid-December, that once promising 10-3 team is still in there. The same team that had already beat playoff caliber teams like Denver, LA Chargers, Washington, Baltimore, and yes, Cincinnati.
Now, on a bitter cold Saturday night in Prime Time, and at home in front of 65,000 plus Terrible Towels waving furiously, the Steelers have a chance to prove they are the team they aspire to be.
The Bengals will come out firing, and they’ll be fighting for their playoff lives, but I think this Pittsburgh team will find their pride and rise to the challenge at hand.
Expect a back and forth affair to start the game before the two teams settle in, and keep it a close knit battle into the 4th quarter, where this one will be decided.
The return of Joey Porter, Jr. will help the secondary, along with Donte Jackson, if he plays, Cory Trice, Cam Sutton, and James Pierre doing whatever they can to contain Chase and Higgins.
The Bengals will certainly miss the services of Chase Brown as a dual threat, so the Pittsburgh defense can expect to see Burrow dropping back to pass the majority of the time.
Suffice to say, T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith have to get to Burrow early and often, as giving him time in the pocket will not end well for Pittsburgh. It would behoove Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin to draw up a few well timed blitzes now and then, too.
Offensively, it’s simple… protect Wilson when he drops back to pass, and create some holes for Harris and Warren to run through. If the run game can get going, it will open up the pass game for Wilson to exploit a weak Cincinnati secondary with Pickens, Austin, and Freiermuth. It would be nice to see Williams get some action, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Like last time, it will be Wilson who is standing tall at the end, with a few touchdown passes, and a night where Pickens gets over the century mark and collects his 2nd straight year with over 1,000 yards receiving.
Pittsburgh may have blown their chance at winning the division, but they’ll take care of the Bengals and be on their way to Houston next weekend to try and win their first playoff game in over seven years.

QUARTERBACK
Russell Wilson | #3
Wilson made his Steelers debut in Prime Time against the Jets, and has rejuvenated his career in Pittsburgh. Now he has the Steelers back in the playoffs, and hopes to take advantage of a weak Bengals secondary and end the team’s three game losing streak.
Passing Yards: 2,334 | TD Passes: 15 | INT’s: 5 | Sacked: 29
Rushing Yards: 139 | Rushing TD’s: 2
Back-up: Justin Fields | #2
Fields played great while Wilson was out, leading the team to a 4-2 record. Should see playing time in certain situations, especially in short yardage situations and in the red zone.
Passing Yards: 1,106 | TD Passes: 5 | INT’s: 1 | Sacked: 16
Rushing Yards: 289 | Rushing TD’s: 5
RUNNING BACKS
Najee Harris | #22
Harris is vastly underappreciated by the local media and fans, despite having a bruising style carrying the ball with a touch of finesse when needed. Good hands out of the backfield. Lacks elite speed, which limits his potential.
Rushing Yards: 1,007 | Rushing TD’s: 5
Receptions: 32 | Receiving Yards: 263 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Jaylen Warren | #30
Warren is a wrecking ball that always seems to get positive yardage. He is a perfect change of pace back next to Harris and should see a minimum of 10-12 carries a game when healthy. Great out of the backfield, with 38 receptions.
Rushing Yards: 490 | Rushing TD’s: 1
Receptions: 38 | Receiving Yards: 310 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Cordarrelle Patterson | #84
Patterson sees plenty of time on special teams, but with his speed and shifty ability, has also been utilized in both rushing and catching passes out of the backfield behind Warren and Harris.
Rushing Yards: 134 | Rushing TD’s: 0
Receptions: 12 | Receiving Yards: 80 | Receiving TD’s: 0
WIDE RECEIVERS
George Pickens | #14
Pickens is undoubtedly the top receiving threat in the Pittsburgh passing game. With Wilson under center, he has been one of the best deep threats in the game.
Receptions: 58 | Receiving Yards: 900 | Receiving TD’s: 3
Calvin Austin III | #19
Austin III has plenty of skills to shine in this league. Now showing what he is capable of with Wilson throwing him the ball. Solid #3 receiver.
Receptions: 36 | Receiving Yards: 548 | Receiving TD’s: 4
Van Jefferson | #11
Jefferson signed with this team and seemed nothing more than an afterthought. His hard work and effort throughout camp and preseason impressed many, and has made the catches when given the opportunity.
Receptions: 21 | Receiving Yards: 125878 | Receiving TD’s: 2
Mike Williams | #18
Physical receiver that was hoping to get his career back on track with the Steelers. Caught a game winning touchdown against the Commanders, but barley used since. OC Arthur Smith needs to get him more involved in the passing game.
Receptions: 8 | Receiving Yards: 107 | Receiving TD’s: 1
Scotty Miller | #13
Receptions: 5 | Receiving Yards: 69 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Brian Skowronek | #15
Receptions: 5 | Receiving Yards: 69 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Roman Wilson* | #10
Rookie 3rd round pick has yet to be used this season. No idea why he’s been in Tomlin’s doghouse, despite practicing fully over the past two weeks.
Receptions: 0 | Receiving Yards: 0 | Receiving TD’s: 0
Rushing Yards: 0 | Rushing TD’s: 0
TIGHT ENDS
Pat Freiermuth | #88
Freiermuth is 2nd on the team with 57 receptions, and leads the team with six touchdown receptions.
Receptions: 57 | Receiving Yards: 568 | Receiving TD’s: 6
Darnell Washington | #80
Mount Washington is an imposing figure that has become a big part of the passing game. God help any corner he happens to be bearing down upon catching a swing pass.
Receptions: 19 | Receiving Yards: 200 | Receiving TD’s: 1
Conner Heyward | #83
