The USF Bulls and Charlotte 49ers needed to win Saturday night’s game. The 49ers needed the win to stay bowl-eligible. Both teams came into the game coming off losses. For the USF Bulls, a question that has been asked was answered early. Bryum Brown has been out for five weeks, getting hurt during the Tulane game. There have been rumors that he has not returned because he might be transferring. Those are just rumors and we will see if he returns next week in the last regular season home game versus the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. It has been mentioned that the Bulls have struggled with the run game. That was a big part of the game Saturday. Also, the defense stepped up and did their job as well.
The USF Bulls dominated this game right from the start. We all know that keeping a defense off balance helps. This was the first game in quite a while that the Bulls could run and pass. They showed how good this offense is when it clicks on all cylinders. USF had 551 total yards with 425 of them coming on the ground. The leader in the ground game was a journeyman, Kelley Joiner Jr. who has been around the program for a long time. He had nine carries for 142 yards averaging 15.6 yards a carry and two touchdowns. The surprise came as the second leading rusher was starting quarterback Bryce Archie with six carries for 72 yards averaging 12 yards a carry.
All six touchdowns came on the ground along with Joiner, running back Nay’Quan Wright also had two touchdowns. He also had seven carries for 43 yards averaging six yards a carry. The two players who had single touchdowns were Ta’Ron Keith and Alvon Issac. The passing game had one big play as Nay’Quan Wright had a 44-yard reception and led all receivers in yards with 50 yards. Bryce Archie went 11-16 for 126 yards and one interception. The turnover did not hurt USF. The Bulls won the turnover battle taking four from the 49ers. That is where the defense stepped up getting two pick-sixes and forcing two fumbles making Charlotte pay for them.
The Bulls have to win just one more of the remaining two games to become bowl-eligible. Their record is 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference. They will not be part of the AAC Championship game as it will be between the Tulane Green Wave and Army Black Knights. Tulane clinched their spot yesterday with a shutout win over the Navy Midshipmen. The Bulls have their last remaining regular season home game this Saturday versus the struggling Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. Tulsa comes into the game with the same record that Charlotte left at 3-7. USF has a good chance to win the remaining two games and finish the season with seven wins. After the Tulsa game, they have a road game versus the Rice Owls who they defeated last year.
