Under a beautiful sky, the USF Bulls were set for battle on a Veteran’s Day weekend. They were playing the Navy Midshipmen. The crowd was not as full as it had been for past games. USF entered the game on a two-game winning streak, and Navy was on a two-game losing streak. The Midshipmen wore road white tops, gold pants, and gold helmets. The Bulls wore green tops, white pants, and white helmets with the USF logo in red, white, and blue. The Bulls won the coin toss but deferred to the second half. Navy runs the triple option offense at times can be difficult to defend. We would have to see how USF would handle it.
After winning the toss, Navy scored first in just four short plays. What kills drives are turnovers and Bryce Archie made one when USF was driving to tie he threw an interception. The Midshipmen would score and take a 14-0 lead near the end of the first quarter. Finally, the Bulls’ defense came up with a big play causing a turnover. Unfortunately, USF turned the ball over on downs. In the first half, after Navy scored their 14 points, USF’s defense settled in. The only problem is other than the opening drive the Bulls’ offense struggled. They showed promise at some points but had no points to show for it. The Midshipmen controlled the clock throughout the first half. The half winded down when Archie threw another interception and the Midshipmen led 21-0 at the half.
The second half was no different from the first. Receiving the second-half kickoff, the USF Bulls couldn’t do anything. The team looked unprepared. Navy would only score seven points in the second half. The defense held strong and near the end of the game the Bulls finally got their first points of the game. USF’s defense had no answer for the Midshipmen triple-option offense. They would come up with stops on the first two downs but on the third Navy would find a way to extend drives. Bryce Archie needs more time and the offensive line did not help him. At times, he looked like he had happy feet throwing two interceptions. Also, the Bulls had no running game despite a few good chunk plays. Instead of going for points on one of their drives, they went for it and did not get the first down.
Alex Golesh challenged a play on one of the Navy’s touchdowns. It was the wrong call because they played stood for a touchdown. The offense needs Bryum Brown back and in a hurry. Hearing rumors that he should be back from his injury but he has not returned. Maybe he wants to leave the program because it was said that Golesh wanted to start Archie even with Brown here. We will have to see if the rumor is true or if will he return next week on the road versus the Charlotte 49ers. The USF Bulls will have to win two out of the remaining three games to be bowl-eligible. Let’s hope they can get back on track after falling 28-7 to the Navy Midshipmen.
