All the way across America the Wake Forest football team traveled. A ton of penalties were called against them. They failed to push in for the touchdown from one yard on fourth down to go up two touchdowns. Relinquishing momentum to Stanford, dread intensified.
Yet they held on to capture their third win in three road games this season.
“The best part about you guys and this team is your heart,” said coach Dave Clawson after last week’s UConn rousing road victory.
He couldn’t be more spot on. This team showed heart again despite the mistakes and some bad plays.
Let’s start by celebrating the heart of Taylor Morin, who in the fourth quarter with the score tied broke a punt return for some 35 yards scampering up the left sideline giving his team good field position. Had he not made that play it seems likely Wake would have lost the game.
Wake drove down for a field goal that ended up being the game-winner, 27-24. Morin came through when his team was on the verge of throwing away a victory with mistakes.
That’s what captains do. That’s what winners do. That’s what Morin does on the field and in the classroom with a 3.9 grade point average he graduated from Wake Forest.
Earlier in the game he lifted his team with a touchdown catch in the corner of the endzone. When you throw it to Taylor Morin, he catches the ball. It’s axiomatic. When you need a clutch punt return, Taylor Morin breaks one for you.
Demond Claiborne was his usual productive self rushing for over 100 yards before leaving with a shoulder injury. Tate Carney took over the ball carrying in the fourth quarter and held up well like he usually does.
Carney is the epitome of dependability. He’ll get you three or four yards a carry at least and rarely gets stopped for no gain. Having him in the game in the final moments wasn’t a worry – even though he’s the second-string back. He comes through no matter the pressure.
Also uplifting was the excitement when Buck Hankmeyer hit Carney for a forty-some-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. You could tell this California Kid QB playing today in California was having fun playing quarterback for Wake Forest.
He’s blended in. He’s a team leader. His teammates believe in him and so do Wake fans.
Nick Anderson’s interception on the final drive to seal the victory was clutch. He’s a tough young man, no question. And he proved today he can make a big play when his team needs it most.
He ran across the field with the ball after the big play appearing to be floating, which is how he and the rest of the Wake players and coaches are going to feel floating back to Winston-Salem enjoying a huge win that now has us all falling more deeply in love with this team than we thought was plausible just a few weeks ago.
Let the Bowl Game fantasizing begin.
