I didn’t want to make the trip to Storrs, CT this Saturday.
Haggling with the Transportation Security Administration. Taking off my shoes, emptying my bag so the world can see my boxer shorts. A tidal wave of interpersonal and personal hassles.
Then I thought about my feelings about UConn which aren’t pure, arguably immature, but justified for sure.
But here we are in this newfangled era of authentic release of how we truly feel.
This is going to be a laborious read but will be worth suffering through.
Let’s start with the Meineke Car Care Bowl in the Riley Skinner Is a Winner Glory Days circa 2010. While at the game in Charlotte, NC, as it became clear Wake would thump UConn, I hung my sign up over a tunnel leading out of the stadium amid hundreds of despairing UConn fans. The sign was benign: “Riley Skinner is a Winner.”
UConn fans didn’t appreciate the gesture, timing, words on the sign, nor me. They yelled at me and threatened to collectively beat me up if I didn’t take down the sign. Right then I learned UConn’s a bunch of sore losers and low-rent physical street brawlers.
They lost. Wake won.
Ha Ha. I’m still giddy about it.
Later that night the Wake Fez Band played at a local bar and lead singer Spars said: “We’d like to welcome all UConn fans.”
Altruistic gesture.
Then there’s Geno Auriemma and his annoying basketball team. Earlier this year Geno said Caitlin Clark doesn’t have the skills or quickness for the WNBA. He also said his star, Paige Buechers, is “the best player in the country and everybody knows it.”
Totally wrong doesn’t even begin to describe what he said. Caitlin Clark Kent broke a few million rookie records this season, won Rookie of the Year, was named First Team All WNBA, and beat Paige and Geno Meano in the Final Four.
Meano Geno is miffed he didn’t recruit Clark Kent so felt the need to denigrate her. Then one of his former players, Breanna Stewey, said Clark Kent would never be considered great if she didn’t win a national title.
So wrong. She had a better college career than Stewey, breaking the all-time scoring record, and Stu looked petty and jealous. Then another UConn egomaniac, Diana Taurasi, said “reality is coming” for Clark Kent entering the NBA. Reality did come, and it was that Clark Kent soared past over-the-hill Taurasi to dominate the league.
Then there’s this year’s UConn football team. They’ve got 45 new players from the transfer portal this season. Stocked up on talent. Loyalty to players who were on the team last year obviously was of no concern. Pay whatever it takes to get more talented players. Buy your way to winning.
Everyone’s doing it, so UConn is not alone, but given all I know about them I think they’re at best one of my least favorite college athletics programs.
Coach Dave Clawson says UConn is a very talented football team. Many could be starters in the ACC.
UConn – building a powerful football posse. Nothing could thrill me less.
On Saturday I hope Wake Forest throttles them all the way to New Haven.
