UVA to Wake: “We Know We’re Better”-Wahoos Will Win

Bantering one day a while back, kicking ideas around, chewing the beef jerky as they say, I asked a member of my family who went to Wake Forest for undergrad and UVA for MBA grad school what the key difference is between the two universities.

“UVA people know they’re better than Wake Forest people,” he said.

Better at scoring on the SAT. Better at syllogisms. Better at analogies. Better at cognitive thinking. Better at abstract conceptualization. Better at math, science, and philosophy. Better at preppy clothes wearing. Better at post-graduate income generating. Better at investment banking. Better at hedge funding. Better at entrepreneurship. Better at professional networking. Better at the acquisition of material possessions.

And better at football.

Which means they’re going to beat Wake Forest this weekend in football.

Virginia will win. Wake Forest will lose.

Because UVA is better in every important way, by all the important metrics: money, power, and influence.

You think I’m exaggerating? Dig this. I was once a friend of a guy who went through undergraduate years at Wake Forest. We would get together in his dorm room and listen to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Butterfly, which doesn’t sound like a song a band called Butterfly would make. Sounds more like a Doors or Grateful Deal noise bomb.

This once friendly person, who at one time I respected and liked, went on to law school at UVA, and every time I talk with him, which isn’t often, he reminds me of his wonder years in law school at UVA. It’s as if our INAGOTTADAVITA experiences never happened.

Out of his mouth, I always hear UVA this, UVA that, and oh UVA. “My buddy from UVA law – man he’s cool. He works on Wall Street and lives in The Hamptons and I went to his beach house this summer and we spent four million dollars on seafood one night then planned to go in on a private jet together.”

Because my friend knows, and Harry Hampton his homeboy knows, and UVA knows that UVA is better. My former friend gone uppity wants me to know he went to law school at UVA and is dismissive of the times we spent together listening to tunes in Winston-Salem at little old forgotten Wake Forest, a place he no longer talks about or remembers. It’s beneath him to even utter the words Wake Forest because he got a law degree from UVA and everybody knows they’re better.

The better people, the better university, the more self-actualizing human beings, the ones touched by the brainpower of Thomas Jefferson, also of course have the better football team.

Can’t wait until Saturday to watch the upper crusters from Charlottesville show all of us Wake Forest peons what winning football looks like, what it’s like to be superior in every way, and what elitism is all about.
