The USF Bulls are getting ready to start their 2024 football season. This will be the first time in quite a while that they are coming off a winning season. Last year, the Bulls won six games during the regular season and appeared in their first bowl game since 2018. In the Boca Raton Bowl, they blew out the Syracuse Orange. Currently, they hold the NCAA record for most points in a shutout win with 45. Also, this is the first time in a while that there are no worries at the quarterback position. Bryum Brown shined last year breaking franchise records. They also hit a home run when it came to coaching Alex Golesh. There are many returning players and USF has some good players in recruiting and the transfer portal. The big news coming into this year is that the on-campus stadium has been approved.
College football now has a 12-team playoff. If the USF Bulls can win the AAC they might be one of the 12. After the Bulls won the Boca Raton Bowl, coach Golesh also said he does not want six wins to just be the norm. He also stated he wants to host the AAC Championship game at Raymond James Stadium. The offense has nine returning starters. Including Brown, he has Nay’Quan Wright who transferred from the Florida Gators. The other one is Sean Atkins who also broke records and many would consider Brown’s security blanket. The offense could take a step forward as the unit did many things right, scored points, and kept the team in games.
The USF Bulls defense has two returning starters in Aamaris Brown and Jhalyn Shuler. Shuler leads the team with 97 tackles, 8.5 of those for loss, and he had two sacks. Brown had 40 tackles and two interceptions in 2023. The Bulls struggled at times last year but still had a big play identity. The defense had 14 interceptions and caused 10 fumbles. That was shown in the Boca Raton Bowl. Someone who could make an immediate impact is transfer D’Marco Augustin from Youngstown State. Just like the offense, many have said they will take a step forward. They made some improvements in the tackling department last year as that has been an issue in the past.
The USF Bulls have been predicted to be fourth in the AAC. The three teams in front of them are the Tulane Green Wave, UTSA Roadrunners, and Memphis Tigers. The Bulls will play the Green Wave and Tigers. The two big out-of-conference games are in week two as they travel to Tuscaloosa to play the Alabama Crimson Tide. The other one is at home against the Miami Hurricanes. I look at it like this. I believe this team could win eight or nine games and they could be in the AAC Championship game. The program is heading in the right direction. Look for them to continue to get better and if they can get through the first four games at 3-1 or 2-2, the season will be off to a great start.
It will be an exciting year for the USF Bulls coming off the 2023 season.
