USF Football: Brown Looking Good Early In The Spring

The USF Bulls are coming off their first winning season since 2018. It’s time for spring football and the spring game is just over a month away. Head coach Alex Golesh is ready and after the Boca Raton Bowl win, he does not want a six-win regular season to be the norm. He wants that to be the base of what he hopes to build and get the program out of the dark days. One of the bright spots of the team last year was the play of quarterback Bryum Brown. Brown set program records, and this all came with a new coordinator and system he had to learn. The 2024 schedule just dropped last week. Many believe the schedule could add up to eight or nine wins.

Brown comes in as a sophomore and comes into spring camp 15 pounds heavier and ready to be more vocal as a leader. He weighed 205 pounds last year but has added shape with the 15 additional pounds. Brown came out and said he felt good, comfortable, and ready to play. Many wonder if can he have the same kind of success he did a year ago. He had 26 touchdown passes, 3,292 yards, and a completion percentage of 64.6. Brown totaled 4,101 yards good enough for second all-time behind Quinton Flowers who has the program record of 4,342 yards. There were just two quarterbacks that threw for 3,000 yards and ran for 800 last year the other one was LSU Jayden Daniels. Daniels will go at the top of the first round of next month’s NFL Draft.

So far this spring, coach Golesh nearly kept Bryum Brown away from the practice facilities. The best part is that Brown is not resting on his laurels. His biggest critic is himself which coach Golesh says makes it easier to coach him. The challenge that the head coach gave Brown is to more vocal in 2024. The best part is that Brown’s competitive juices have started flowing. Even though the USF Bulls cruised to a 45-0 win against Syracuse they know there is a bigger goal. One thing that I have heard at multiple press conferences is that Golesh wants to have the AAC Championship game played at Raymond James for the right for USF to be playing for a conference championship. Their goal now is to win the conference championship and be one of the 12 teams in the upcoming college football playoffs.

No doubt that coming into the 2024 season Brown will be the starter. The quarterback room at USF still has talent behind Brown in two-sport athlete Bryce Archie. Archie is also a pitcher on the USF Baseball team. Freshman Marcelis Tate is also waiting in the wings. The best part of all this is that, unlike the past spring games, the question was who the starting quarterback was going to be. Well for the 2024 game that question is answered and now the Bulls can focus on just a whole team game. They need to just follow the same system that worked last year in hopes the USF Bulls can compete for a conference championship in 2024.
