CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Wednesday brought a culmination of all of the hard work from the first nine days of preseason action, with the BC football offense and defense facing each other for their first intrasquad scrimmage of the preseason, inside of Alumni Stadium for the first time this year. The Eagles worked on a variety of game situations, including full-length drives, red zone sets, goal-line situations, third downs, and special teams scenarios.
DAY TEN DETAILS
Date: August 14
Location: Alumni Stadium
Weather: 73 and sunny
Offensive Highlights: The first two series went to Thomas Castellanos, who converted first downs with his legs, before a nice first-down connection with Reed Harris on a rollout to his right. Castellanos had his legs working today, flashing his ability to run between the tackles or beat the defense to the edges. The longest play of the day came on the third drive, with Grayson James connecting with Jayden McGowan over the middle for what became a long touchdown. James preceded a completion to Jerand Bradley to set up the scoring play. Kye Robichaux picked up where he left off in the backfield, stringing multiple strong runs together, including multiple touchdowns and broken tackles. Lewis Bond showed off his skill in the open field, getting open for multiple third-down conversions and not going down easily. Castellanos made the throw of the day on a deep sideline route to tight end Kamari Morales, floating it perfectly over his right shoulder for a long gain. Jaedn Skeete made a sensational contested catch with the offense backed up, leaping up and over the defender to move the chains downfield.
Defensive Highlights: On the opening drive of the day, George Rooks got his hand up for a PBU at the line, setting up a defensive stand and a three-and-out to start the scrimmage. Max Tucker made a great play on the second drive, diving to break up a pass in the red zone. Owen McGowan logged his first of two interceptions on the day on the fourth drive, playing the tip drill to perfection. McGowan’s second interception set up a huge return into the red zone. Carter Davis and Cameron Martinez showed out on the fifth drive with Martinez making an open field tackle outside the numbers, and Davis bringing two running backs down, first on a rush and second on a swing pass. The two then combined to stuff a short-yardage touchdown at the goal line. Donovan Ezeiruaku made a great shoestring tackle to stuff a run up the middle, and his fellow edge rusher Neto Okpala followed with a QB pressure to force an incompletion on the same drive. Omar Thornton made a great play on a leaping PBU to disrupt a touchdown in the red zone. Khari Johnson later deflected a pass and prevented a touchdown on a 1v1 deep over the middle.
Special Teams: Luca Lombardo converted on the first field goal of the day, splitting the uprights from 35 yards out. Cameron Martinez flashed his skills in the return game, setting up the offense in a good position on multiple occasions. Lombardo hit from 32, 36, and 39 yards after that.
