After decades of not speaking with each other because they went to rival high schools and had great disdain for each other, a motley assortment of Georgetown Prep, St. John’s, and Gonzaga 60+-year-olds will head toward the Bethany Beach Caribbean tiki bars this Saturday at 11:00 am.
The headliner for the first annual “Spoog Crooze” will be Spoog who will bring along with him the guy who never should have won the MVP of the Prep 8th grade hoop tourney in 1976. Sammy Sportface and Johnny Williams should have been co-MVPs and Rudy should have been All-Tournament Team for busting Blessed Sacrament for 17 from distance.
The Spoog Crooze will unravel on an overcrowded, banged-up boat acquired somehow by Whit, who will immediately accelerate his boat to 70 MPH to the Bethany St. Thomas Virgin Islands boat docks and adjacent sprawl of bars peddling cheesesteaks and Orange Crushes.
Whit being Whit, he’ll get impatient after a while and insist the crew all get back in the boat and head over to North Beach in Dewey which is his Cheers Bar where everyone knows his name and he gets to smoke cigs outside with his toes embedded in the sand.
Tensions are likely to run high during this waterway wanderlust between the high school Hatfields and McCoys.
“With all the Visitation girls watching, I blasted the longest home run ever hit at Prep,” said Sportface. “It went over the gym and the pitcher was Lisa Ridgeway’s boyfriend, Charlie Leasure. I can’t wait to regale the fellas on Saturday about how far I hit that ball, how many cuss words Leasure barked at me as I did the Kirk Gibson arm pump around the bases, and imitate how all the girls shouted “Charlie, Charlie, he’s our man. If he can’t do it, nobody can.”
After docking the boat to end the day, all members of the crew will sprint over to Mango Mikes on the Bethany boardwalk to crash the Prep reunion party from 5 to 7 pm. Sportface will be looking for Leasure to ask him about the home run. It’s bound to get testy.
Good chance the non-Prep guys will be cooly received at best.
“I hope something happens so I can write a blog about it,” said Sportface.
