Senior man staring at his smartphone in confusion
The followers of Sammy Sportface are rising up in unison shouting from Mount Olympus that they don’t want him to keep texting them his blogs at all hours of the day and night.
The “ding” noises are popping off all across America from Austin to Los Angeles and down to Australia on the smartphones of followers who never asked Sportface to text them his blogs. The newest form of noise pollution.
They’re being awakened from their sleep earlier than they had planned, being disrupted during work Zoom calls, getting hit by Sportface spam while eating breakfast and fielding requests from their wives to tell Sportface to cut it out, and suffering through an overall poor customer experience ensnarled in the full-throttle Sportface distribution process.
Many of them have been open, as recently as this week, that they aren’t reading Sportface’s texts anymore and are too far behind and have given up trying to keep pace with the torrent of text messages with links to Sportface blogs on SwimSwam, NGSC Sports, and the Facebook Baby Boomer Brotherhood Blog.
“It’s really annoying and exasperating,” said one member of the Baby Boomer Brotherhood who asked to remain anonymous. “I never asked to receive these texts yet he keeps sending them to me even after I tell him I already get sent his Facebook posts which I never read either. You would think he would take the hint but he doesn’t seem to be able to do that. Sportface is unreachable.”
Another member of the Brotherhood said he’s getting the same blogs sent to him every day on three different text distribution chains, and refuses to read any of them until he gets taken off two of the three lists, but even then he says he probably wouldn’t read them.
Last night Sportface found out one member of the Brotherhood doesn’t read deep into the blogs before deleting them. “I usually don’t get past the first few words,” he said.
Other text victims have tried the silent treatment. They don’t engage with anything Sportface texts them hoping he’ll catch on and stop texting. But that’s a risky approach because Sammy doesn’t keep track of who he’s texting his blogs to, who is on multiple distribution lists, and who are the chronic complainers who make it clear they don’t want his texts.
Sportface is thinking all this over, unsure if texting people who don’t want his texts is a good strategy to build clicks and followers or if, long term, it’s bad for business. But he calls on the thinking of the great newsman Dan Rather who said “no story is worth a damn if it doesn’t get out.”
What’s most worth pondering – at least from Sportface’s viewpoint – are the throngs of textees who ghost Sportface for months and sometimes years without responding. It’s not clear to Sportface what that means: a) stop texting me b) Sammy Sportface doesn’t interest me and you shouldn’t be surprised by that c) what are you on?
“I don’t know how to read this situation just like I don’t know how to read a room which is kind of the same concept,” said Sportface. “But my gut tells me the guys who don’t respond are the ones who love Sportface the most, and they’re just too shy to let me know; they don’t want their friends to find out. Besides, texting is an effective medium to get the Gospel According to Sportface out so unless something changes it’s going to be business as usual. The Sportface momentum is far too fast to tinker with the strategy now.”
