Next week the golf world will have its second major of the 2024 golf season. It will be the 106th edition of the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. At one time the PGA Championship was the final major of the year. It is now the second one as right before the pandemic shut the world down it was moved to the major after the Masters. The weather, as of right now, it looks like there could be rain on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We will have to wait and see as they always adjust either finishing rounds the next morning or going out earlier in the day to try and get the round in. The weather will be cooler than it was at the Masters.
There have been so many good memories at Valhalla Golf Club. Looking back at the 2000 PGA Championship. This would be a chance for Bob May to defeat Tiger Woods in a playoff. May hit his approach shot on the 18th hole 16 feet past the hole. Woods was already on the green and faced a six-foot birdie putt. May hit his putt and many of the fans standing by the green thought he was going to miss the putt, but it dove in. After that, we were all in anticipation as Woods stood over his putt and made it and then we got the trademark two fist pumps. Woods would go on to win in the playoff and win his third straight major and second PGA Championship.
Another was in 2014 as Rory McIlroy, in the final group, got a dramatic win in the dark. The group in front of him was Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler. As dark approached, they were trying to get done. McIlroy and Bernd Weisberger were waiting. Mickelson and Fowler hit their tee shot and they were waiting to hit their second shot they were told for the group behind them to play. Mickelson nearly holed out for an eagle which would make McIlroy make a birdie to win. He missed his chip shot and Rory would go to win which up till this point is the last major he has won. McIlroy has not won a major in 10 years. The name I think that will be on everyone’s mind for this year’s winner would be Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler has been on fire, and he just won the first major of the year, The Masters.
Michael Block, who was the outstanding player for last year’s PGA Championship. is in the field. He will also be joined by 16 of the LIV Tour players. Jon Rahm and company will try and win. The tournament will start on Thursday, May 16th. The fans can watch the tournament on ESPN and ESPN+ on Thursday and Friday. It will be on CBS and Paramount+ on the weekend. The field will include Tiger Woods despite his struggles at The Masters. Brooks Koepka will be trying to go back-to-back as PGA champion. It will be a great tournament and at the conclusion, we will be halfway through the majors on the PGA Tour.
