So, as golf fans, we see PGA professional players on TV. We all hope to one day to play like them. Most of us will never will. We would also like to meet and play golf with them. Most of us will not get that either. I got to play in Pro-Am which included the Champions Tour which is the senior tour. That experience was a great one to see how the golfers are treated. I bring this up because of what happened at the PGA Championship a couple of weeks ago. A PGA teaching pro named Michael Block not only qualified for the PGA Championship, but he also made the cut. He got to live out the dream that most of us would love to have. He got to play and be on the same golf course as PGA pros. It was on a major stage at one golf major.
With Michael Block being a PGA teaching pro, he has played in 26 events and has made five cuts. But to cut a PGA major. There are four of them and the courses are set up to be the hardest. The PGA Championship was once the final major of the year but after Covid that changed. It is now the second major of the year and now the final major is the British Open or Open Championship. One of the exciting moments for Michael Block was making a hole-in-one in his final round. All four rounds at the PGA Championship were in the ’70s. He shot the first three rounds in the 70s and in the final round, he shot a 71. Overall, he finished at one over for the tournament. After finishing in the top 15 he will be back at the 2024 PGA Championship.
The following week, he was also invited to play in the Charles Schwab Challenge. Unfortunately, he missed the cut. At Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California he is a teaching assistant. There was a video that was shown to him during his post-round press conference. The video filmed by his son under the weather showed the club going crazy after the hole-in-one and the final putt on the 18th hole. It brought Block to tears to see that. He also cried when he found out he was invited to play in the Charles Schwab Challenge. Michael Block was also given an exemption to the RBC Canadian Open. I am not sure if he has accepted it. In the final round of the PGA Championship, he played with Rory McIlroy who gave him a big hug after the final hole.
When Brooks Koepka won, he was with Michael Block and joked with him that drinks were on him. The reason is he had made a hole-in-one on the 15th hole. The reason I brought this up is this is what golf is all about. This is why many of us play golf because of moments like this. The same happened at the Masters with Sam Bennett making the cut and shining at the tournament. Bennett had just lost his dad and had a saying that his dad said on his forearm. It has been two great stories at the first two majors on the PGA Tour. This is good for the game despite the ongoing war between the PGA and LIV. Maybe one of us golf fans could be the next Sam Bennett or Michael Block.
