As the field of 68 dwindles to four, it’s time to look back and evaluate which conferences emerged as the winners and losers of the March Madness frenzy. While conferences like the ACC and Big Ten had stellar tournaments, the Pac-12 and Big 12 were disappointed. With an array of upsets, nail-biters, and Cinderella stories, this year’s tournament has been no exception to the exhilarating unpredictability that defines March Madness.

The High-Flyers

The ACC was this tournament’s top performer. The conference sent four teams into the Sweet 16, with Clemson, Duke, and North Carolina State all advancing to the Elite Eight. N.C. State defeated Duke to advance to their first Final Four since 1983. Overall, the ACC heads into the Final Four with a 15-5 record.

The Big East stood out as well, although most of that was because of Connecticut. After sending three teams to the Sweet 16, the second-most of any conference, only UConn advanced past that point as Marquette and Creighton lost. However, UConn continues to make the Big East look strong as they head into the Final Four as the favorites. Overall, the Big East is 9-4.

The Big 10 has also had a solid tournament going 11-5. Both Purdue and Illinois made it to the Elite Eight, with Purdue going one step further, advancing to their first Final Four since 1980. The SEC finished out at 10-7. Despite some disappointing performances by the likes of Kentucky and Auburn, the conference got an Elite Eight appearance from Tennessee and a Final Four team in Alabama.

Disappointing Performances

The Pac-12 and the Big 12 struggled in this year’s tournament. The Pac-12 went just 6-5, with Arizona being the only team to advance to the Sweet 16. With aspirations of playing in the Final Four in their home state, the Wildcats suffered a disappointing loss to Clemson, failing to advance to the Elite Eight.

The Big 12 had high hopes going into the tournament with Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, and Baylor. However, Houston and Iowa State suffered upset losses in the Sweet 16 while Kansas and Baylor failed to get past the second round. The Big 12 finished with a 7-10 record.

Analyzing the Impact: Final Four Odds and Player Highlights

In addition to the conference performances, the evolving narrative of the NCAA Tournament also brings into focus the Final Four Championship odds and player props. As UConn, Purdue, Alabama, and N.C. State inch closer to the ultimate prize, the odds offer a glimpse into the perceived strengths and potential victors, painting a picture of anticipation and excitement for fans and bettors alike.

Meanwhile, player props highlight individual talents, underscoring the pivotal roles certain athletes play in their teams’ success and offering insights into who might rise as the tournament’s standout performers. These elements add layers of intrigue and speculation, enriching the tournament experience by inviting discussions about strategic bets and standout athletes poised to leave their mark on the court.

Room for Improvement

Mid-major conferences traditionally put forward some surprises, but this year, the big conference teams mostly dominated the tournament. Gonzaga of the West Coast Conference and San Diego State from the Mountain West were the only mid-majors to advance to the Sweet 16. Both teams, however, were blown out by top seeds Purdue and UConn, respectively.

Conclusion

The 2024 NCAA Tournament has been a showcase of collegiate basketball’s finest, with every conference bringing its unique flair and competitive spirit to the fore. While the ACC shone the brightest, every participating conference contributed to the rich tapestry that makes March Madness an unforgettable spectacle.

As fans and teams alike turn their gaze toward the Final Four with UConn, Purdue, N.C. State, and Alabama, the lessons learned and the memories forged in this tournament will undoubtedly fuel the aspirations of many. The beauty of March Madness lies in its unpredictability, and if this year’s tournament has taught us anything, it’s that in the world of college basketball, anything is possible.
