Since this is Easter weekend, the ACC pushed back their schedule by a day. All series this weekend will be Thursday-Saturday so teams can enjoy the holiday. This week, we will take a look at how the conference is doing six weeks into the season.
Florida State’s Jamie Arnold has the best ERA in the country. The sophomore has made six appearances totaling 34.2 IP. He has allowed only three runs of which two are earned. His ERA of 0.52 is the best in the land. He has company in the ERA chase. Georgia Tech’s Carson Ballard is 20th with a 1.50 ERA. In 24 IP over five appearances, Ballard has allowed eight runs, four of them earned. Wake Forests’ Chase Burns is tied for 40th in the country for a struggling Demon Deacons team. His ERA of 1.53 comes over 37.1 IP, and eight earned runs given up so far.
The batting chase has three members of the ACC tied for 10th in the nation. Ben Miller of Duke is hitting .444 (44-of-99) in 23 games played. He is joined by Cam Smith of Florida State and Jason Torres of Miami. All three are hitting .444 and are 44-of-99. Drew Faurot is tied for 5th in doubles with 13 in 23 games. Duke’s Ben Miller tied for 8th with 12 in 25 games. Alberto Osuma of North Carolina also tied for 8th with 12 in 26 games. Also on the list are Virginia players, INF Henry Gobdout (11 in 24 games) and Catcher Ethan Anderson (10 in 25 games). The home run race finds Carson DeMartino of Virginia Tech tied for 5th with 13 long balls in 23 games. Clemson’s Blake Wright is also tied for 5th with 13 in 24 games. Florida State’s James Tibbs III and North Carolina State’s Alex Makarewicz tied for 29th with 10 home runs.
On the team side of things in the ACC, Virginia is tied for 15th in double plays as they have turned 24 in 25 gamers. North Carolina is tied for 17th with 23 in 26 games. Notre Dame is tied for 30th with 21 in 23 games. Clemson is tied for 40th with 20 in 24 games. Duke’s pitching staff is fifth in the nation with a 3.45 team ERA (97 runs, 84 earned in 218.2 IP. UNC is 19th with a 3.90 ERA. 120 runs,98 earned in 226.1 IP. Florida State is a surprising 24th with a 4.00 ERA. 106 runs, 90 earned in 202.1 IP. Virginia Tech is 26th 4.01 ERA. 101 runs, 90 earned in 202 IP.
Florida State’s pitching staff is second in the nation in strikeouts per nine with 12.8 (288 in 202.1 IP). Wake Forest is sixth with an average of 12.1 (285 in 211.1 IP). Duke is 10th, with 11.3. 275 in 218.2 IP. Clemson is 30th with a 10.3 average, 246 in 214 IP. Georgia Tech is 45th with an average of 10. 217 in 195 IP. Throwing strikes is important for a staff. In the base-on-balls list, the Yellow Jackets are 6th with 173 in 23 games. Right behind them is Wake with 172 in 24 games. North Carolina is 12th with 163 in 26 games. Clemson is 16th with 154 in 24 games. Miami is tied for 32nd with 143 in 24 games. Virginia is tied for 41st with 140 in 25 games. NC State is tied for 47th with 135 in 22 games.
Florida State is tied for 4th in shutouts with four in 23 games. Duke is tied for 7th with three in 25 games. Duke is second in the country in hits allowed per nine with 6.17 (150 in 218.2 IP). Wake Forest is 11th 7.28, (171 in 211.1 IP). Florida State is 14th 7.47 (168 in 202.1 IP). Clemson is 31st 8.07 (192 in 214 IP).
