A forlorn and dejected member of the Baby Boomer Brotherhood sent me an email this week that he was trying to rally dozens of people in his office to fill out their brackets for the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) which starts tonight.
Two hundred years ago he went to Wake Forest when I did and his team was not one of the 68 selected to play in the prestigious March Madness Tournament 330 million will be watching while our alma mater is playing in a tournament less than 30 people will be watching.
“Kind of bummed, not getting any traction with my NIT bracket idea at the office,” he shared. “I guess no one thinks the NIT is important and so they don’t want to waste their time filling out a bracket about a tournament that doesn’t matter.”
Sounded about right. But I couldn’t keep wondering if it might have been just my downcast friend just isn’t the most popular guy in his office. So today I set up a Zoom call today with 300 of my closest friends in the office. In a clickbait-laced attempt to pull in a big audience my Zoom invite was worded this way: “The Best College Basketball Tournament is Not March Madness. It’s the NIT. Join me on a Zoom to fill out brackets for this less hyped, more substantive, less corrupt, and more pure men’s college basketball tournament.”
The call was set to last an hour. At the outset I wanted to brief all of them on the 64 teams in the NIT so they could get some familiarity before they filled out their brackets. At the end I left 10 minutes for Q and A.
Only one guy joined the call: my boss.
“Hey loser, get back to work and stop doing loser work,” he said. “You don’t have time to be clowning around with these kinds of time-wasting activities. You’re already being closely watched for performance management issues. No one cares about the NIT. No one cares that your team, Wake Forest, didn’t make the real tournament. No one cares about you or your high school basketball career you’re always talking about. No one cares about Sammy Sportface or that you lead a double life or what you really want to be doing with your life. No one cares where you went to college, what your passions are, how bad you feel that Wake choked down the stretch. No one cares about your family nor where you were born nor what you like to do on your summer vacations. No one likes you. Now shut down this Zoom call and get back to work. Send me some of your lousy work that I can add to your performance management file as ammunition to get you outta here.”
