Despite a 36-point effort from Jonathan Cisse, TSU fell short in the closing minutes as Alcorn State squeaked out an 82-79 win over Texas Southern Monday night.
TSU fought back from an early 9-0 deficit and went on a 19-7 run over the next five minutes to lead 19-16 in the first half. The contest was evenly played as the first half came to a close en route to a 40-37 lead.
Alcorn State took control of the second half as they led by as much as 13 with 6:45 remaining. However, TSU fought back with a vicious 22-4 run over the next 4:40 with a team effort as Cisse, Deon Stroud, Kenny Hunter and Jaylen Wysinger all scored as TSU went 9-of-11 while forcing four turnovers. With TSU holding 79-74 lead with 2:04 left, TSU was whistled for a foul and ASU recorded two free throws to trail 79-76. ASU would end the game on an 8-0 run as TSU was held scoreless the final two minutes.
Jonathan Cisse hit eight 3-pointers and scored 36 — both career highs — to lead the Tigers (13-15, 11-6). Deon Stroud added 11 points and Kenny Hunter pitched in with eight points and three blocks.
TSU is back in action against Prairie View A&M for its 2024 regular season finale inside the H&PE Arena on Saturday.
