What If Beating Duke Was Just the Start of Our Championship Journey Together

Read Time:2 Minute, 55 Second

What if Saturday’s wonderful win over the Dukies turns out to be just the start of a sensational, once-in-a-lifetime, six-week journey to basketball euphoria? What if that game was our launching pad for a space rocket ride, unlike any trip any of us have experienced or imagined? It would be glorious and bond us for the rest of our lives as Wake Forest fans, one big family, in full-on glory, this one time, this first time.

What if this blast into the sky has the Wake hoopers winning the rest of its regular season games? What if in the ACC Tourney, they fly atop the stadium rafters to the final game and meet the Dukies and make them even more despondent by sending them home losers again and the Wake Quad gets rolled again? What if the Wake hoopers, and every one of us, gain more Stamina feeding off Cam Stamina and blaze through the March Madness tourney whipping Carolina in the Elite Eight? What if after that blissful basketball experience, the Wake Quad gets rolled again?

What if every one of you reading this gets a ticket to the Final Four and we all convene at a barbecue joint in Phoenix on Friday night for food, Shirley Temples, and fine wine capped off by a pregame speech by Sammy Sportface?

What if during the rhetorical outburst, Sportface talks about how fast everything goes, how we’ve never rallied at a Final Four together to root for our Wake Forest hoopers? What if Sportface talks about that night being the most special any of us has shared together, reminding everyone we’ve waited our entire lives to get a chance to gather and celebrate with each other at college basketball’s biggest event?

What if Sportface reminisces about his days as an undergraduate at Wake worried every day that he would not graduate, that he did it and you all did it and somehow 40 years went by and we had kids and got married and had careers and all of that was monumentally tough and yet rewarding and stimulating and all worth it in the long run?

What if during that speech Sportface mentions all the Wake people who have inspired him including Parking Lot, Rumby, Annette Gray, Mr. Parking Lot, Idea Man, Silly Willie, Rip, Mac, Arnie, DJ, Rudy, TJack, Rip, and Naves?

What if we really go to Phoenix for the Final Four and our wonderful Wake team, led by Hunter Games, shows the United States how fine a basketball squad they are, and plays better than the opponents?

What if Wake dumps Duke in the final game with Parking Lot drilling the game winner from the Parking Lot?

What if all the players cut down the nets on Monday night as national champs and we all stay around, arm in arm, to watch as “One Shining Moment” plays with a video montage of Wake’s run to the title?

What if that happens and we’re all there at the game and afterward, we go out again together and stay up all night ordering dinner and breakfast and smoking cigars and whatever talking about our Wake Forest experiences and this being the ultimate crescendo, being with each other, hugging and embracing, loving each other, celebrating our small school in Winston Salem that won the national hoops championship for the first time ever?

What if the Quad gets rolled again?

What if all this happens?
