In college football, there are certain teams that are not part of one of the many conferences in college football. The biggest independent team that has not joined a conference is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Many will say that is because they have a huge TV deal with NBC. The AAC will have a new member in 2024. The Navy Midshipmen are already a part of the conference. It was announced just a short time ago that the Army Black Knights will be joining the AAC. This means that the Army/Navy game will still be a non-conference game. We all know that the game between the two academies is one of the greatest traditions in college football. The game is different because the kids that play go off to help defend our freedoms.
Both Army and Navy are only in the AAC as football members. Even though Army is joining the American, they will still play Air Force. The three academies play for the Commander Chief’s Trophy. Many college football fans gear up for the second weekend in December for the annual game. It is a game that many would like to attend as the game takes place in Philadelphia. At Lincoln Financial Field home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Now that Army joined the conference, fans are looking forward to seeing them play the conference.
Having Army join the conference is great for the fans as they get to see them play more often. They will continue to have their games primarily on CBS. The only academy that is not in AAC at the current time is Air Force as they are part of the Mountain West Conference. The Commander in Chief’s Trophy is one of the coolest trophies in all of college football. How many would like to see a Marine team play football? That is the one branch that does not have a football team. Many are curious when will the Army/Navy game become a conference game. Those two questions could be answered sooner than later. Along with Notre Dame, the other two independent schools are UConn and UMass.
Maybe the end of the independent teams could be coming to an end in college football. Having two of the great academies in college football in the same conference will be great. The Army Black Knights run an interesting style of offense the triple option. It has been very hard to defend against it. The AAC teams will have to be prepared for that as Navy has also run that style of offense from time to time. Most fans are excited about them becoming a part of the conference. The Knights are one of the most respectable programs in the country. Look for a day in college football where there will be either 3 or 4 power conferences and every team will be a part of one of them. For the time being, let’s welcome the Army Black Knights to the AAC.
