When the schedule came out, the month of September was going to be big for the Boston College Eagles (1-3, 0-2). That’s because they had four home games in the five total they would play in the month. The plan was to use the month to get off to a good start before the schedule switched on them. Unfortunately, that has not happened, the best the Eagles can do is 2-3 overall, assuming they get their first league win this Saturday afternoon vs. Virginia (0-4, 0-1) at home. This game is just as big if not bigger for the Cavaliers who are looking to get untracked themselves as the month comes to a close.

Last Saturday, on the road for the first time in 2023, the Boston College Eagles ran into a buzzsaw in the Louisville Cardinals. They raced out to a 28-0 lead en route to a 56-28 win. Quarterback Jack Plummer was unstoppable throwing the football for the Cardinals. He also got great protection from his offensive line that gave him time to find receivers downfield. Plummer threw five completed passes of at least 40 yards. He completed his first 15 attempts before his first incomplete pass. For the day, Plummer was 18-of-21 for 366 yards, five touchdown passes, and no interceptions. He also ran for a score as well. He was named QB of the Week in the ACC. BC played uphill the entire afternoon and they had no passing yards in the first quarter. QB Thomas Castellanos was 17-of-33 for 265 yards and three scores. For the third time this month, he was the leading rusher with 49 yards on 10 carries and a TD. The rushing score was a 39-yard TD run. But the game became a track meet, which is not how BC wants to play, and is not very good at yet.

This Saturday, they face a desperate team in the Virginia Cavaliers who will be looking for their first win of the season. Last weekend they came close, but a FG with no time left on the clock gave North Carolina State the 24-21 win on the road. The Cavaliers, as you might expect, have had problems on the defensive side of the ball. Through four weeks they have allowed 151 points, and going back to a season ago, they have lost seven games in a row. A bright spot for this team might be WR Malik Washington who had a big night vs. the Wolfpack. He led Virginia’s offense with career highs in receptions with 10, receiving yards with 170, and touchdowns with two. He had 107 yards after contact last Friday night. He has now caught a pass in 29 straight games and leads the league in receptions per game with seven, receiving yards per game at 114.75, total catches with 28, and total reception yards with 459. His effort last Friday night earned him the ACC Receiver of the Week Award.

Both teams need this game badly so expect both teams to pull out all the stops to get the win. With the hope of turning around their season. While it is still the first month of the year, neither team can afford many more missteps. It could be a wild day at Alumni Stadium on Saturday. It’s Virgina at Boston College.
