Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Thoughts and Preview of the 2023-24 Season

The 2022-23 Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost in the first round of the playoffs. It was the final game for future Hall of Famer Tom Brady. The Bucs had a losing record last season but still made the playoffs. They now face how to replace Brady. They have Kyle Trask who they drafted in the second round in 2021. The Buccaneers also went out and brought in Baker Mayfield to start competition at the quarterback position. Tampa Bay also has another problem blooming in linebacker Devin White wanting more money but still coming to training camp. There was a change on the offensive line as Tristan Wirfs moved from right to left tackle. The Bucs also brought in a new offensive coordinator in Dave Canales to run the offense. With all these changes let’s see how they do this season.

Many believe that Todd Bowles is on the hot seat. If the team struggles or misses the playoffs he could be gone. The quarterback position is the biggest question that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers must answer. Many say that Trask is not ready and it’s Baker Mayfield’s job to lose. The latest news is that Mayfield is making more mistakes than Trask. Either way, according to Canales and Bowles, they are both giving it time to decide. Also with Canales, look for the offense to be more spread and the running game to be used more. Look for Rachaad White to have a good season. The Bucs are in the weakest division in all of the NFL. The NFC South is not what it once was. The Panthers had the first overall pick after they traded up. The Falcons are also in the middle of a rebuild.

The Saints brought in former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, and many have them favorite to win the NFC South. The four teams in this division have been predicted to win nine to 11 games. But just like last year, it could be a losing record that still makes the playoffs. The Buccaneers also have a chance to win the division. They play the NFC North that no longer has Aaron Rodgers who has left for the New York Jets. The only team in that division that Tampa plays is the Buffalo Bills. The other division that is easy to win would be the AFC South. Outside of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the other three are up in the air. The Titans are in question because they rely primarily on Derrick Henry. The Texans like the Panthers have a rookie quarterback.

The Colts also have a new quarterback and coach. These games should be easier to win. The games that the Buccaneers may struggle with will be against the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, and San Francisco 49ers. Also having a bye week in week five will be difficult especially if there are injuries. I think in the division the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be 4-2 or 5-1. The only team that will give Tampa Bay some trouble is the one that had Tom Brady and their number for the past few years in the New Orleans Saints. One of the remarkable aspects of the 2023-24 season for Tampa is that in week six after the bye week they will wear their creamsicle orange jerseys. The same jerseys that they had many losing seasons. They will host the Detroit Lions.

This season will be enjoyable because of the quarterback situation. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a chance at a winning season. The offense will take some time to get into rhythm whether it’s Kyle Trask or Baker Mayfield at the helm. The defense was good last year and will be again and can keep the Buccaneers in close games that can result in wins. The division will come down to if they can beat the Saints in their two head-to-head games. We will see early on as they meet in week four in New Orleans and then in week 17 at home. Let’s see how the 2023-24 season turns out.
