Life for us is entering a new phase and is on the ascent. This is our time to rise even higher.
Our careers are either over or just a few years from ending. That whole stressor is pretty much a thing of the past. We don’t ever have to grapple with the vexing question: what do we want to do with our lives? We decided that several decades ago, executed the plan, stumbled and fell, rose, and succeeded to various levels.
It feels good because we don’t have to worry about that much anymore. This fact alone is reason for us to celebrate, kick our feet up, and feel good about ourselves and each other.
Our kids are well on their way with their lives, finishing college or launching careers. We had to just stick our heads down like marathon runners, stare at the road, and play a mental game with ourselves that we would somehow get through it if we just tried not to think about it.
Now here we are, beyond so many hurdles on life’s obstacle course. Doesn’t it feel nice? Look back at those hurdles. You don’t need to ever get over them again.
Don’t you feel proud of what you accomplished with your career? We all wish some things had played out differently, but for the most part, we did our jobs faithfully and honestly.
It took hourly, daily, and yearly discipline. And we did it.
We woke up. We went to work. For what seemed like an eternity.
But it wasn’t until eternity.
It was until now.
I’m sitting in a Starbucks in Rehoboth Beach having a quiet moment to myself, typing, sipping a caramel coffee, appreciative that my life has panned out the way it has and I’ve reached, pretty much, the end of a difficult, thrilling, gratifying, annoying, and ultimately satisfying career. I hope you feel the same way about your life.
It’s Friday. My only job was to go get a can of propane gas so my family would be able to grill meats and eat crabs together.
Together – that’s the word to focus on. Together – after all these years my wife and kids still enjoy gathering at the beach to enjoy seafood, sip wine, and talk about the paradise around us, the green trees, the cool shade, the bursts of beaming sun, hitting tennis balls, riding bikes and feeling the breeze on our faces, reading books, resting our heads on comfortable beds, and not setting any alarms to wake up at a certain time.
Tonight before dinner we’re getting together on the beach with my beloved cousins for a perfect Friday night happy hour kicking off the weekend. We’ll bring our chairs, and crackers with cheese, adult beverages, and kid beverages, and form a semi-circle, facing the ocean, looking out at the Atlantic Ocean, our dependable toy since we were born.
This is the same beach, the same location, the same scene, the same chair arrangements, the same body of water we’ve been gathering near since we were babies.
Six decades ago.
Seems like six months ago.
Still getting together, us older ones now, joined by the twenty and thirty-somethings, and younger kids.
We will talk. We will laugh. We will catch up. We will observe. Some kids will probably be jumping off the lifeguard chair.
The sand will soothe our feet. The sizzling sun will start to fall. The air will cool, and maybe a light breeze will visit making us feel even more comfortable and blissful on the beach.
And the ocean waves will keep tumbling in as they have our entire lives.
The tumbling will feel reassuring.
And familiar.
A life-long friend, the water has been, to all of us.
For as long as any of us can remember.
