Many people say that Alex Golesh is just another Jeff Scott. In Scott’s final season as USF football head coach the team went 1-11. They never won more than two games in a season when he was their head coach. He went 4-26 in his tenure. Golesh did well as an offensive coordinator. He was at UCF with Josh Heupel, and they both moved to Tennessee. Scott was at Clemson under Dabo Sweeny. The USF Bulls just had their spring football game last month. Golesh came out and said that it was sloppy. The one aspect that I would call sloppy was all the penalties. After the game, he said, “This is the biggest summer in the history of this football program.” This program is not at a crossroads, but they are at a very important point in the history of the program.
I mentioned in my USF Bulls spring game review that the crowd was huge. The fans are excited about Golesh. The game was held at Corbett Stadium which is a soccer stadium. If the on-campus stadium occurs, it will be a short walk from Corbett. This is part of what makes the upcoming months so important. The one question is will the crowd we saw at the spring game show up at Raymond James Stadium? The fans want to see this team compete and win games. They are tired of seeing a team only winning one or two games per year. During the game, Golesh said the Bulls only had five wide receivers. Kelley Joiner moved to slot receiver to help. In recent news, Michel Dukes has been suspended indefinitely after a domestic battery charge.
Golesh was happy Joiner switched positions, but he needs the USF Bulls 2020 leading rusher back as a running back. He did get some transfers to help with the shortage at wide receiver. The team must come together and in a hurry. What was said by Golesh at the spring game makes it seem like Year 0 reset more than Year one. He is trying to get pieces and players in place to have a sustainable program. I am excited to see what kind of team the USF Bulls will have in 2023. This team has the potential to win more than two games.
The AAC division has gotten easier to win. Outside of the penalties, it was an exciting and entertaining game. Just like in the past, the quarterback position is one of the biggest questions heading to the start of the season. It will be either Gerry Bohanon, Byrum Brown, or Coastal Carolina transfer Bryce Archie. I talked about Archie in one of my previous USF Bulls articles. Golesh will get the right players in place and the season should go well. This could be one of those times that this team rallies and has a great season. I also see that being the underdog could help the Bulls. If no one excepts anything out of them, it will be better if they struggle. The fans will have to be patient with Golesh and not compare him to Jeff Scott.
