Rory McIlroy won his second straight Masters title. Scottie Scheffler also finished the year with another FedEx Cup championship. Meanwhile, Aaron Rai and Ryan Fox captured their first major championships. However, several accomplished golfers struggled to match their previous standards. Expectations always follow major champions and established stars. That makes disappointing seasons stand out even more. Here are seven golfers who underwhelmed during the 2026 season.
Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth entered 2026 with plenty of optimism surrounding his game. He had moved beyond his wrist injury and subsequent procedure. Early results also suggested better days could follow. Spieth recorded three top 15 finishes during the Florida Swing. Unfortunately, his season never reached another level. Spieth failed to record a single top 10 finish. That marked the first season without a top 10 result in his career. He finished No. 52 in the FedEx Cup standings. The three-time major champion also missed his third straight U.S. team appearance. His 2027 season now carries plenty of importance.
Brooks Koepka
Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour created plenty of excitement. The five-time major champion competed in only 16 tournaments. Injuries continued to affect his season, while his putting remained a major problem. Koepka finished inside the top 10 only once. He never finished inside the top five during 2026. He also missed the FedEx Cup Playoffs. His major championship performances failed to produce much excitement. That represented another frustrating chapter for one of golf’s biggest stars.
Jon Rahm
Jon Rahm still produced victories during his 2026 LIV Golf season. He won twice and captured his third straight individual LIV title. Yet those accomplishments did not completely erase the concerns surrounding his game. Rahm failed to produce a defining major championship moment. His statistical performance also dropped significantly. CBS Sports noted that Rahm posted his worst true strokes-gained season since his sophomore PGA Tour campaign. His future also became more complicated after LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rahm ranked among the players owed millions by the league.
Bryson DeChambeau
Bryson DeChambeau entered 2026 with enormous expectations. His 2025 major championship campaign created plenty of momentum. However, his 2026 major results failed to match that standard. DeChambeau missed the cut in the first three majors. He later finished tied for 14th at The Open Championship. His iron play actually improved during the season. Still, his driving numbers declined from previous levels. The major championship struggles ultimately defined his year more than his LIV success.
Keegan Bradley
Keegan Bradley experienced a difficult follow-up season. Bradley enjoyed an excellent 2025 campaign. He won the Travelers Championship and reached the Tour Championship. He also made the decision not to select himself for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. The 2026 season looked completely different. Bradley failed to reach the postseason. He also discussed the mental effects of the Ryder Cup throughout the year. His late-season improvement arrived too late to change his overall results.
Tony Finau
Tony Finau remains one of the most talented players without a major championship. However, his 2026 season fell well below his usual standard. Finau experienced his worst approach season since 2016. He also produced the worst driving campaign of his career. His putting continued another troubling trend. Finau lost strokes putting for the fourth consecutive season. The results eventually caught up with him. Finau missed the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the first time in his career. He also owns just one top five finish across his last 43 starts.
Ben Griffin
Ben Griffin faced a different challenge than the other golfers. He entered 2026 after winning three times during the previous season. Naturally, expectations increased. Griffin still produced seven top 20 finishes across 25 starts. However, he failed to reach the Tour Championship. His Presidents Cup hopes also suffered a major setback late in the season. Griffin entered the final stretch inside the automatic qualifying positions. Then, he dropped outside the top six during the final four rounds. His 2026 campaign showed how difficult it can be following a breakout season.
Final Thoughts
Underwhelming does not necessarily mean a golfer played badly. Players like Rahm and DeChambeau still produced impressive moments. Yet their previous accomplishments created much higher expectations. Spieth, Koepka, Bradley and Finau faced even tougher realities. Their seasons lacked the consistency fans expected. Meanwhile, Griffin learned how difficult it can be following a breakthrough campaign. Golf rarely offers guarantees from one season to another. One year can bring trophies, confidence and momentum. The next can expose weaknesses that previously remained hidden. That makes the 2026 season a fascinating reminder of professional golf’s unpredictability.
Golf is such a tough sport even professional struggle at times.
