About the Eagles

Boston College is 12-2 and ranked for the first time in two years following a series win at No. 10 Virginia Tech last weekend. The Eagles, who own a program-best record through 14 games, peak in the polls at No. 18 by Baseball America. Junior first baseman Joe Vetrano, the reigning ACC Player of the Week, and junior left fielder Cameron Leary lead the BC lineup with six home runs while hitting .283 and .308; respectively. Senior center fielder Barry Walsh, who bats first or ninth in the lineup, is tied for the team lead in RBI at 13 with a team-high .383 batting average. Graduate right-hander Chris Flynn anchors the Eagles’ rotation in the Saturday roll with a 4-0 record, 0.79 earned run average, and 12.7 strikeouts-per-nine innings.

Against The Ranked

Boston College is 3-1 against ranked opponents, all in the top 10, to start the season. The Eagles defeated No. 2 Tennessee (3/7) in extra innings for its first highest win over a ranked foe since defeating No. 1 NC State in 2019. A series win at No. 10 Virginia Tech (3/10-11) was the first for BC since winning twice at No. 25 Auburn in 2021 and first ranked series win in conference play since defeating No. 11 Duke earlier that same season. The BC record for wins in a season against ranked opponents was set in 2016 with an 11-10 record.

Inside The Polls

The Eagles re-entered the national polls on March 13 as the No. 18 team in the country by Baseball America and No. 24 in the ESPN/ USA Today Coach’s Poll. BC was last ranked on March 15, 2021; the Eagles third consecutive week in the polls. In 2021, Boston College’s No. 13 ranking in Baseball America was the highest in program history and the highest for a New England program since Connecticut (No. 14 – 2011 final poll).
