Well, the college football season starts about five or six months from now. All of the teams are getting ready to start spring football. For the USF Bulls, this is a new start for the spring. This is the first year under new head coach Alex Golesh. Jeff Scott was fired last year after his horrible tenure. Golesh has some work to do. The program has been in disarray for many years. He has finally got his coaching staff together to elevate the players. Some have stayed others have come in and left through the transfer portal. One of the most significant announcements so far for the USF Bulls was that the Board of Trustees approved 22 million dollars to design the phase of a new on-campus stadium. The design that has been picked will seat 35,000 fans. Golesh believes that is a big step for the program moving forward.
The USF Bulls spring game will be on April 14th. The game will be on-campus at night. The spring game is a cool time to see what players and schemes the team will use in the 2023 season. One of the biggest takeaways from the first practice was the fast tempo. Golesh came from the Tennessee Volunteers under Josh Heupel. Heupel was once at UCF, and he ran an up-tempo offense. Maybe Golesh is trying to do the same at USF. At this time, he said the quarterback position will be decided in the fall. Veteran quarterback Gerry Bohanon did practice Monday and he still recovering from his shoulder injury. Bohanon suffered that injury against the Tulane Green Wave. The other two quarterbacks that have impressed Golesh are freshmen quarterbacks Bryum Brown and Bryce Archie. Brown did well last year in his starts.
With the offensive line, you have players that were great like Brad Cecil and Demetrius Harris. It will be interesting to see how the offensive line will do in 2023. The USF Bulls also lost running back Brian Battie who transferred to Auburn. The offense will need a new look and I am sure the fast-paced offense will help with all the losses. The biggest issue from 2022 was the USF Bulls’ defense. One of the biggest issues was getting off the field on 3rd down. They would tire out at the end of games and their opponents knew it and took advantage of it. Todd Orlando is USF’s new defensive coordinator. He will implement his style in the hope to turn a struggling defense around. It will be interesting to see how the USF Bulls’ offense and defense do in 2023.
It has been announced there will be 15 practices leading up to the spring game next month. There will be two more than 12 after spring break. Golesh stated that within the first four months, the players were excited to get on the field. Many say that Golesh is just like Jeff Scott in chapter two. I disagree with that because Scott coming from Clemson did not run a fast-paced offense as they did at UCF and Tennessee where Golesh came from. The USF Bulls fans just want to see some improvement. In many games last year they were outplayed right from the start of the game. The one that comes to mind was against the Louisville Cardinals. The second home game of the season is against the Alabama Crimson Tide. We know they won’t win but let’s hope they can make it completive. Let’s see what happens in 2023.
