NBA Swing: A Very Busy Trade Deadline

What a busy day it has been in the basketball world. Including trades going back to the beginning of the season, 27 of the 30 NBA teams took part in a trade with the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers (Washington traded Rui Hachimura in January) not taking part in any trades. In the span of five days, Brooklyn traded away both of their stars in what many are calling one of the biggest basketball failures of all time. The first trade between Dallas and Brooklyn included the following:

  • Dallas Receives:
    • Kyrie Irving
    • Markieff Morris
  • Brooklyn Receives:
    • Spencer Dinwiddle
    • Dorian Finney-Smith
    • 2027 Second-Round Pick
    • 2029 First-Round & Second-Round Pick

Late Wednesday night, Brooklyn made another shocking move many thought of in the NBA offseason with the following trade:

  • Phoenix Receives:
    • Kevin Durant
    • TJ Warren
  • Brooklyn Receives:
    • Mikal Bridges
    • Cam Johnson
    • Jae Crowder
    • Four First-Round Picks
    • 2028 Pick Swap

This move came as a surprise to many as basketball media personalities and outlets predicted that the Nets would not trade KD following the Irving trade and that the Suns would not trade the heart of their team in Mikal Bridges. This is only the first of several moves that the Nets made today.

Hours before KD was moved, the Lakers made a strong move, finally getting off Russell Westbrook’s contract in the following three-team deal:

  • Lakers Receive:
    • D’Angelo Russell (Via MIN)
    • Jared Vanderbilt (Via Utah)
    • Malik Beasley (Via Utah)
  • Utah Receives:
    • Russell Westbrook (likely to be bought out, Via LAL)
    • Juan Tuscano-Anderson (Via LAL)
    • Damian Jones (Via LAL)
    • LAL 2027 First-Round Pick
  • Minnesota Receives:
    • Mike Conley (Via Utah)
    • Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Via Utah)
    • 2024, 2025, & 2026 Second Round Picks)

The trade sees the start to retool around LeBron James and Anthony Davis bringing in several reliable pieces including former Laker D’Angelo Russell. This would not be the only trade the Lakers made as they look to improve during the final stretch of the season.

Many players returned to their former teams including Gary Payton II, George Hill, Jakob Poeltl, and D’Angelo Russell. At the same time, there are many NBA players who have already been waived, will be waived, or are expected to be bought out including Russell Westbrook. Reputable sources throughout the league, including Yahoo Sports Chris Haynes, have reported that the buyout market is expected to be huge.

There are several players in rumors who were expected to be moved who were not moved. Many expected the Wizards to trade Kyle Kuzma and the Heat to possibly move veteran guard Kyle Lowry, in addition to the Bulls and Raptors blowing up their teams. There are a lot of questions coming out of the deadline. The Phoenix Suns have become one of the highest odd-based contenders following their trade while Brooklyn’s distant future looks good, but their immediate future is in question. As for what lies ahead for 30 teams, there are still games to be played and questions to be asked before 2023 NBA free agency in July.
