NBA Swing: Why 2027 Free Agency Could Change the League’s Landscape

The 2026 NBA offseason has been one of the wildest offseasons in recent memory, with several big names joining new teams through free agency and trades. The biggest moves would see the Philadelphia 76ers become a modern-day superteam, adding Jaylen Brown in early July via trade and LeBron James joining a few weeks later on a two-year deal. While the 2026-27 season is still two and a half months away, many are looking beyond next season to 2027 free agency.

The 2027 free agency class is set to be one of the best classes in years, with nearly a dozen stars headlining the class. Notable 2027 free agents include:

While it’s possible several of these free agents could sign extensions with their current teams before the beginning of the season, talks are expected to move into the 2026-27 season. One of the biggest names is without a doubt Nikola Jokic. For the second summer in a row, Jokic has declined to sign an extension with the Denver Nuggets. Because of his decision, Jokic could potentially sign a five-year extension worth upwards of $359 million, making it the richest contract in NBA history. Jokic automatically makes any team he is on a championship contender. Despite that sentiment, the Denver Nuggets have failed to build a contender around Jokic after the 2023 championship.

Denver is currently the only team in the league set to be in the second apron of the salary cap next season. Christian Braun’s contract has become an albatross for the team while names like Aaron Gordon and Cameron Johnson have underperformed. The future of Peyton Watson is unknown as he is a free agent and Denver is rumored to want to retain him, but is also willing to sign-and-trade him for the right price. Jamal Murray had a career year, but with his contract upwards of $50 million, there are questions of whether he may have to be moved in an attempt to manage the salary cap.

Nikola Jokic has previously said he wants to remain in Denver for the rest of his career, but as recent NBA history shows, even the most loyal players could end up in a new home, one way or another. Jokic could shift the landscape of either conference if he were to leave the Nuggets. Dream pairings with Luka Doncic, Stephen Curry, and more have all been imagined. For Denver, their numerous mistakes could result in pushing away the biggest star in the franchise’s history.

Another top-five player in Giannis Antetokounmpo is currently set to be a free agent next summer, but extension talks are expected to take place soon. With the Heat in a questionable position in terms of roster construction, many have already questioned if Miami can compete with the powerhouses of the Eastern Conference like New York and Philadelphia. Previous rumors suggested Giannis would only want to go to a team he’d want to sign an extension with, but if Miami were to have a disastrous season, could Giannis change his position on playing in South Beach?

Several veterans nearing the ends of their careers could chase the bag one last time or make the decision to focus on a championship opportunity rather than the money like LeBron James did this summer. In Los Angeles this past season, Kawhi Leonard would have had one of the best years of his career, landing on an All-NBA team. The trade to the Toronto Raptors is potentially dead in its tracks with the league’s investigation into Leonard ongoing; Kawhi is still set to be a free agent next summer. In a best-case scenario for Leonard, he can play the 2026-27 season and be a free agent next summer. He may re-sign in Toronto if he plays next season there, or he could attract numerous contenders who could see Leonard as their missing piece.

Another vet nearing the end, Kevin Durant has been a controversial player to some the last few years but is still one of the best players in the league who can raise their ceiling. With a player option set for next summer and the 2025-26 season being an up-and-down season for Durant, another difficult season in Houston could see Durant look for a new home. Given his recent opinions on LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers and the comparison to Durant’s own decision to join the Golden State Warriors in the summer of 2016, KD could make the decision to pursue a third ring on a cheap deal with the right team.

There are countless potential names expected to be a part of the 2027 class in addition to these stars, who could play a significant role for a new team if they leave their current teams next summer. Former All-Stars like Kyrie Irving, Zach LaVine, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Tyler Herro, and more could all be on the free agency market.

The 2027 free agency class could very well cause one of the biggest shifts in the league in recent history. Many of the big-name free agents are in questionable situations, and the 2026-27 season will play a significant role in their futures. Contract talks are expected to pick up for several players, but if the 2026 offseason has shown anything, it is that the unexpected could happen for these players and their respective teams.
