2022 Eagles Take the Field as a Team for the first time

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College football arrived at Fish Field House for its first preseason practice of the 2022 season on Friday morning. Third-year head coach Jeff Hafley and the Eagles got to work in helmets and spiders as they prepare to install a new offense under first-year offensive coordinator John McNulty.

Quarterback Phil Jurkovec led the offense into his third training camp with the team. Jurkovec, who was limited to six games due to injury a year ago, looked strong in the passing and running game. Preseason recognitions have rolled in for Jurkovec, who is on the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch Lists.

Notes From Day One:

The offensive line was the first to the field inside Fish Field House… the quarterback room, led by returning starter Jurkovec, arrived sporting freshly shaved goatees… Hafley’s directive to get Zay Flowers the ball was evident early in team periods… Dante Reynolds was a frequent playmaker in the passing game with the first and second teams… Emmett Morehead completed a pass to Taji Johnson on a back shoulder grab through tight coverage… the offensive line featured several interchangeable configurations as the unit begins to mesh… converted defensive lineman Jackson Ness saw reps at center… offensive lineman-turned defensive lineman Dwayne Allick was back in a white practice jersey working on the offensive side of the ball, where he spent his freshman season in 2020… Jalen Cheek picked off a pass on an overthrow in a 7v7 period… Spencer Witter, who emerged as the Eagles No. 2 tight end behind Hunter Long in 2020, appeared to be back in form as a receiving threat; Witter played in just seven games without a start last season.

Fall Camp Heating Up for the Eagles

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Saturday marked practice No. 2 for the Boston College football team inside Fish Field House. The Eagles will host the ACC Network at practice the next two days as BC will be featured on the network’s ACC Road Trip Monday night at 7 p.m.

Explosive Plays: Play one of the day saw Phil Jurkovec go up top to Zay Flowers for a 45-yard grab over the shoulder to the sideline… the biggest play of the day came when Jaden Williams beat the secondary and Jurkovec hit him in stride for 75 yards to the house… back-up running back Jackson Treister made a quick read of the defense at the line of scrimmage and bounced outside for a long gain… Jurkovec dropped a dime to Williams in tight coverage… in the final period, redshirt-freshman Lewis Bond beat his man off the line and classmate Emmett Morehead found him down the sideline for a 45-yard reception, as Bond cut inside at the 10 before being brought down.

Defensive Highlights: Redshirt-freshman safety Cole Batson came over to help on a deep ball intended for classmate Dante Reynolds, in the first team period, and picked up a big pass break-up… defensive backs had the upper hand in an early 7v7 with PBUs from Elijah JonesCJ Burton and Amari Jackson, while also forcing several check-downs… safety Steve Lubischer hid underneath and popped up for a pick… true freshman Daveon Crouch picked up an interception over the middle.

Observations from the sideline: Flowers, the Eagles’ No. 1 receiver, and corner Josh DeBerry constantly lined up one-on-one in drills and match-ups in offense vs. defense periods… former defensive back-turned-linebacker Kam Arnold can still cover when matched up against a wide receiver; going stride-for-stride with Jaelen Gill on a ball intended for the receiver.
