The Florida Gators return to The Swamp looking for an immediate response against South Carolina. No. 16 Florida hosts the Gamecocks on Saturday, October 10, in Gainesville. Kickoff comes at 12:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network. Florida enters the game at 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play. South Carolina comes in at 2-3 and 0-3 in conference action. However, both teams enter Saturday after painful losses. Florida suffered a 45-17 defeat at Missouri last Saturday. The loss followed four consecutive victories to open Jon Sumrall’s first season. Meanwhile, South Carolina suffered an even more heartbreaking defeat. The Gamecocks led Kentucky 17-0 before eventually losing 35-34 in overtime. Kentucky won with a successful two-point conversion after its overtime touchdown. Therefore, Saturday offers both programs a major opportunity to change their direction.
Florida’s Offense Has Produced Big Numbers
Florida’s offense struggled at Missouri, but its season numbers remain impressive. The Gators average 46.2 points and 491.2 total yards per game. They also average 216.4 rushing yards and 274.8 passing yards. Quarterback Aaron Philo has become an important piece of Florida’s early success. Philo has completed 84 of 121 passes for 1,114 yards. He has thrown eight touchdowns against only two interceptions. His completion percentage sits at 69.4 percent. However, running back Jadan Baugh remains the centerpiece of Florida’s offense. Baugh enters Saturday with 613 rushing yards. He struggled against Missouri after dominating during Florida’s undefeated start. Florida needs to establish Baugh early against South Carolina. Doing so could create easier passing opportunities for Philo. It could also keep South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers watching from the sideline. Dallas Wilson provides another important weapon for Florida. He leads the Gators with 302 receiving yards entering Saturday.
Sellers Gives South Carolina a Dangerous Weapon
South Carolina’s record does not reflect Sellers’ individual talent. The Gamecocks quarterback has thrown for 1,059 yards through five games. Sellers has eight touchdown passes and four interceptions. However, his legs make him especially dangerous. Sellers has rushed for 391 yards on 53 attempts. That gives him an impressive 7.4 yards per rushing attempt. Kentucky learned about that ability last weekend. Sellers exploded for 147 rushing yards during the overtime loss. His 74-yard fourth quarter run helped South Carolina regain momentum.

He also passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns against Kentucky. Florida cannot allow Sellers to escape containment. That challenge becomes more significant considering Florida’s defensive numbers. The Gators allow 393 total yards per game. Opponents average 266.6 passing yards against Florida’s defense. South Carolina also features running back Matt Fuller. Fuller has rushed for 433 yards and five touchdowns. He averages 6.1 yards per carry. Therefore, Florida must account for multiple rushing threats.
Florida Owns the Series
History strongly favors Florida. The Gators lead the all-time series 31-10-3. Florida also owns an impressive 17-2 record against South Carolina in Gainesville. Florida has won seven of the previous 10 meetings. The teams last met on October 14, 2023. Florida escaped Columbia with a thrilling 41-39 victory. The Gators also dominated the previous meeting in Gainesville. Florida crushed South Carolina 38-6 in November 2022. However, the Gamecocks dominated Florida 40-17 one year earlier. South Carolina’s last victory in Gainesville came in 2014. The Gamecocks won that game 23-20 in overtime. That history gives Florida another advantage Saturday. Still, history will not help the Gators if they repeat last weekend’s mistakes.
Turnovers and the Running Game Could Decide It
Florida has protected the football effectively this season. The Gators have thrown only three interceptions through five games. They have also lost only one fumble. Florida’s running game could become the biggest factor Saturday. South Carolina has produced significant rushing numbers itself. Fuller and Sellers have combined for 824 rushing yards. Therefore, both defenses must win at the line of scrimmage. Florida also needs a stronger defensive performance after Missouri exposed several weaknesses. The Gators struggled against explosive passing plays last weekend. Their young secondary faced additional pressure after safety Bryce Thornton missed the game. Thornton’s availability remains something to watch this week. Receiver Vernell Brown III also continues working back from a knee issue. South Carolina has an important personnel question as well. Star defensive end Dylan Stewart remained suspended entering this week. His status could significantly affect South Carolina’s ability to pressure Philo.

Pressure Surrounds Both Teams
Florida suddenly faces adversity after looking dominant during September. The Gators scored at least 44 points during each of their first four victories. Then Missouri held them to 17. Now, Sumrall must show how quickly his team can respond. South Carolina faces even greater pressure. The Gamecocks have dropped three consecutive games after opening 2-0. They also remain winless through three SEC contests. Still, Sellers gives South Carolina a chance against almost anyone. Florida must contain his scrambling ability while limiting Fuller between the tackles. Meanwhile, South Carolina must slow Baugh and force Philo into uncomfortable situations.
The Swamp should provide Florida with another advantage. Saturday also serves as Florida’s annual Homecoming game. Florida enters as the ranked team with the stronger record. However, both teams have something important to prove. South Carolina needs a victory to stop its SEC slide. Florida needs one to prove Missouri represented one terrible afternoon. That combination should create plenty of urgency when the Gamecocks enter The Swamp.
Look for the Florida Gators to bounce back against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
