With free agency passing and training camp not starting until September, the NBA is in the slowest part of the offseason. Many teams have set their rosters for the 2022-23 season, while others are still looking to sign free agents. Several players are in rumors of being traded, although nothing has happened yet. Teams are making changes in their front office and with the coaching staff. The offseason may be slow, but there is plenty to be intrigued about between now and the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

KD to Boston; Is the Team’s Relationship with Jaylen Brown Damaged?

Easily the biggest story of the NBA offseason so far is Kevin Durant’s trade request from the Brooklyn Nets. The two-time champion has been linked to many teams including the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns. One team that has popped up in rumors this week is the Boston Celtics. In a busy offseason thus far, the Celtics have improved the team that went to the NBA Finals. Boston added Malcolm Brogdon, a nearly 20PPG scorer in addition to veteran sharpshooter Danilo Gallinari. Boston did not have to give up much for Brogdon, essentially making the move a steal of the offseason and deepening their bench. With Durant being linked to the team as recently as Monday, there is a real possibility Boston could acquire Durant if Boston offers the right pieces. Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Boston offered Jaylen Brown as the centerpiece in the trade, but Brooklyn wanted Marcus Smart as well. Brown expressed his frustration with the rumor and talks, simply tweeting “smh”. Brown has been in Boston trade rumors over the years, even during the first half of the 2021-22 season. With two years left on his contract, Brown will be with Boston until 2024 unless a trade occurs. Losing Brown would be hard for Boston fans but acquiring Durant could give them the piece needed to win one or several championships over the next handful of years.

Free Agents

There are still a handful of free agents available heading towards the 2022-23 NBA season. Notable free agents include Colin Sexton, Carmelo Anthony, and Dennis Schroder. It was reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers offered Sexton a three-year, $40 Million contract. It was later reported that Sexton saw that contract as a lowball offer. Sexton only played 11 games during the 2021-22 season before tearing his meniscus in November. However, he averaged a career high 24.3 PPG in addition to 4.4 APG and 3.1 RPG during the 2020-21 season. Coming off the meniscus injury, there is no telling if Sexton will be the same player as before. Looking at other free agents, one of the most talked about of the offseason is Miles Bridges. Currently facing felony charges of domestic abuse and child abuse, it is likely Bridges has played his last game in the league for a long time, if not forever. Veterans like Carmelo, Rajon Rondo, Isaiah Thomas, and Blake Griffin have not found new homes or re-signed with their teams, even though they were productive during their playing time. Veteran big man Dwight Howard is another player who has not found a new home after playing with the Lakers this past season, though rumors have noted there’s a mutual interest with the Brooklyn Nets. A surprising player that has not been signed yet is Montrezl Harrell. The 2020 Sixth Man of the Year spent time in Washington and Charlotte last season, averaging splits of 13.1 PPG, 2.0 APG, and 6.1 RPG. Harrell still has plenty to offer coming off the bench, but only time will tell what kind of contract he gets.

Minimal Jerseys and Retro Jerseys

In the last few weeks, several NBA teams have revealed new jerseys ahead of the 2022-23 season. The Utah Jazz revealed several jerseys alongside their retro purple jersey. Many fans criticized the team for their new minimal black, white, and yellow jerseys. Not too long after, the Cleveland Cavaliers introduced new jerseys alongside a new logo. Cleveland was also criticized for their minimalist jerseys. At the same time, several teams have released retro jerseys or jerseys paying homage to classic jerseys. The San Antonio Spurs previewed their statement jerseys for the 2022-23 season, celebrating the 50-year legacy of the team. They also announced a black-on-black jersey, paying homage to the early days of the team. Both have received positive feedback so far as the Spurs have been of the few teams able to pull off a minimalist design on their jerseys.

The Washington Wizards were another team to introduce a new jersey, paying tribute to the city’s cherry blossom. On Wednesday, the Milwaukee Bucks revealed their upcoming statement jersey, a black, green, and purple antlers jersey. There is one jersey announcement that has stood above the rest though. Earlier this week, the Detroit Pistons revealed their beloved teal jerseys would be coming back after over 20 years. One of best jerseys in NBA history, the reception to the announcement has been nothing but positive. Seeing this, many fans have argued that today’s jerseys have become too basic and minimal, and they want to see more retro jerseys. Fans have called for retro jerseys including the 90s Toronto Raptors jersey, the Vancouver Grizzlies jerseys for Memphis (which will be returning), and more to be brought back .
