Whether you are into the NFL, NHL, or NBA, coaching demands an awful lot from a person; let’s be honest about this, some people that step up to the plate to coach a team simply don’t have what it takes to be that driving force behind the team.

If you are thinking of a career in football or hockey coaching, the following attributes will really help you to create a winning combination.

  • Great understanding of the sport – American football is a complex game of brute strength and strategy and in order to be a good coach, you need a real insight into the game. You should know all the plays and offense and defense drills; check out Flag Football with Coach D for a package that includes everything you need. The kit includes printable playbacks and drills, helping your team to a winning formula.

  • Fair but firm – There has to be discipline within the team and the line between acceptable and unacceptable can be very thin at times. You need to earn the respect of your squad and if you are a good role model, it won’t be long until the players will follow you to the ends of the Earth!

  • Excellent communication skills – This one is a must-have for anyone who wishes to excel in coaching team sports; you have to be able to turn the team around from a deficit in the first half so they come back and win the game! We all have our own unique ways to motivate others and with your own personality shining through, you can lift team spirit and morale with just a few words. Click here for happy life tips.

  • Knowing your squad – You need to take the time to get to know every player in your squad and there should be no favoritism on display, as this breeds dissent. Getting to know your players is vital if you want them to reach their full potential and create an ambiance where a player would come to you if they were bothered about something. We don’t want players to fear the coach, rather they should respect him or her and seek counsel when troubled. A personal problem can impact a player’s game and if you feel one of the team isn’t their usual self, make it known that you are always available.

  • Role model – Ideally, you want all the players to look up to you and respect isn’t a given, it has to be earned. Walk the walk as well as talk the talk and you will gain a reputation as someone who means what they say and this will stand you in good stead throughout your coaching career.

The US government offers a lot of free resources to help sports coaches and with real passion for the game and the patience that is required for coaching, your team will be setting a few records this coming season.
