CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College is 7-11 on the season following its weekend series at No. 19 Virginia. Sophomore first baseman Joe Vetrano, who reached base in all five plate appearances last Tuesday vs. Holy Cross, leads the Eagles’ lineup with a .375 batting average. He owns a 1.145 OPS with five home runs and 22 RBI. Sophomore right fielder Cameron Leary is fourth with a .304 average; leading the way in home runs (8), RBI (23), and slugging percentage (.739). Leadoff-hitting left fielder Travis Honeyman, who started just one game in 2021, is coming off a three-home run weekend at UVA. He is hitting .351 with five home runs and 22 runs scored.

All-Time vs. Northeastern…

BC leads the all-time series over Northeastern, 98-64-2. The Eagles have the longest win streak in series history at eight games between 1997 and 2000. BC has won eight of the last 10 match-ups, including six in a row from 2015-17.

Last Time They Met…

RHP Joe Mancini got through six innings, starting with five shutout frames, to get a 5-3 win at Northeastern on April 6, 2021. In a 3-0 game, the Huskies cut the deficit to a run on back-to-back homers in the sixth and got the tying run on base against Mancini before he escaped the jam. Lefty Charlie Coon nailed down the save; striking out three in the ninth. Leary went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

Summer Ball All-Stars…

Seven Eagles earned summer league all-star honors in 2021, including sophomore outfielder Travis Honeyman that won NECBL MVP honors and the league batting title with a .430 average. Junior outfielder Barry Walsh also earned NECBL All-Star honors, while sophomores Patrick Roche and Aidan Crowley were Futures League All-Stars. Sophomores Joe Vetrano and Cameron Leary earned All-Star appearances in the MLB-run Appalachian League. Junior infielder Luke Gold hammered six home runs and hit .267 as a Cape League All-Star.

The Birdball Long Ball…

Through 18 games, Boston College has gone deep 29 times; the most on record (2005-present) since hitting 27 home runs in the first 18 games of the 2008 season. Cameron Leary leads BC with eight home runs; tied for the most by an Eagle in the first 18 games with classmate Luke Gold’s 2021 season. Leary’s individual total is equal to or higher than 10 BC team totals over that span.

Graduate School…

BC added four grad transfers, including three right-handed arms and a left-handed hitting outfielder. Brendan Coffey (Sacred Heart) led the NEC in saves in 2021 with 10 and a 0.76 ERA. Liam Dvorak (Holy Cross), a member of the Irish National Team at the 2019 European Baseball Championships, won nine games with a 4.33 ERA and 141 strikeouts. Henry Leake (Babson) pitched in 37 career games, including 24 as part of the Beavers’ 2019 CWS team. Rafe Chaumette (Trinity University) hit .367 with 265 hits, 163 runs, and 162 RBI and was a four-time SCAC First Team selection.

Gold Climbing to 100 Hits…

Luke Gold needs three hits to reach 100 in his career. His former teammates Sal Frelick (72 games) and Cody Morissette (73) each broke the BC record for fastest to 100 hits in back-to-back seasons. In 2020, Morissette passed former first-round pick Tony Sanchez (81 games), who held the record for 11 years. Gold has already played in 77 career games and seeks to become the third player in three years to best Sanchez’s mark of 100 hits in 81 games.
