Texas Southern baseball dropped a pitching duel as UTRGV scored a run in the eighth in a 1-0 decision on Saturday.

TSU was solid defensively early on as they escaped several jams with the first occurring in the second as starter Brian Williams recorded an inning-ending strikeout with two runners on. UTRGV had runners on second and third in the third frame but TSU escaped again as Williams forced an inning-ending groundout. In the fifth, UTRGV once again had runners on first and third but Williams escaped the jam again with a fielder’s choice.

The Vaqueros played small ball in the sixth to get a runner in scoring position but Williams again forced an inning-ending flyout. TSU once again escaped a potential situation in the seventh as Williams recorded an inning-ending groundout with a runner on third.

After a relatively quiet afternoon offensively, TSU would have an opportunity to strike first on the scoreboard as CJ Castillo singled but was picked off. Michael Goudeau drew a full-count walk and moved to second on Tyrese Clayborne’s single. After a pitching change, TSU’s Johnathan Thomas singled but Goudeau was thrown out at home attempting to score.

TSU went to the bullpen in the eighth and ran into an early jam with two walks which forced another change on the mound as Adolf Castillo replaced George Osborne. A wild pitch moved both runners to second and third followed by a walk that loaded the bases. UTRGV scored the game’s first run on a sac fly before TSU recorded consecutive outs.

UTRGV had a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the contest.

CJ Castillo led TSU with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate while Williams struck out five in seven innings of action. Osborne was tagged with the loss in relief.

TSU baseball is back in action at Tulane on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
