This is what we know about the Boston College football team. When Phil Jurkovec is in the lineup, this team can play with most teams in the country. When he is not, this team will struggle. Last Saturday afternoon at Georgia Tech was another example of this statement. The Eagles QB accounted for five touchdowns in the 41-30 win over the Yellow Jackets. In doing so, Jurkovec was named ACC Quarterback of the Week and was named to the Manning weekly award list. With the win, the Eagles (6-4, 2-4) will be heading to a bowl game for the sixth straight year.

Jurkovec was the story of this game as he ran for three scores including a game-clinching 31 yard run to the house with 2:48 left in the game. He also threw for two scores putting the offense on his back and taking them to the win. In a supporting role, Boston College received another 100-yard rushing game from Pat Garwo (24 carries for 104 yards). Phil’s numbers look like this, through the air he was 13 of 20 for 310 yards and ran the ball eight times for 71 yards. The three scores were from 8, 14, and 31 yards. This, despite the QB saying after the game that his injured wrist “was not fully recovered” then added, “we are working on it.” BC was helped by a Yellow Jacket defense that has not been good this season. Coming into Saturday’s game, they were ranked 11th in the conference and 109th in the nation in pass defense. In the first half alone, Jurkovec threw for 237 yards. Add to that the 11 penalties the Yellow Jackets took for the game and you can see why the season has become a lost one for them.

Still, the Eagles had a hard time putting Georgia Tech (3-7, 2-6) away. Backup quarterback Jordan Yates did his best to keep his team in the game. Yates was 17 of 28 for 128 yards and one INT, to go along with the TD pass. He was sacked three times by the Eagles’ defense. Jahmyr Gibbs contributed 104 yards on the ground to go with five catches for 29 yards. Gibbs scored Georgia Tech’s first score of the game on special teams returning a kickoff 98 yards to paydirt. Then, he added a four-yard run with 8:53 left in the game that made things a little interesting in the end.

Not to be overlooked, the BC defense did their part as they put up a goal-line stand that resulted in a GT field goal. They stopped a long Tech drive with a Jason Woodbey interception at the BC one-yard line. Both of those defensive stops took place in the second half. The Eagles return home to play their final two games of the regular season. First up is the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday at noon.
