It was another disappointing loss as the Hornets fell to the Panthers of Prairie View 24-20. With this loss, it puts the team at a 3-5 record and a 2-4 conference record.

The first half looked good for Alabama State. Scoring on three of their six drives in the first half. The first drive was a stalemate as they went three and out resulting in a punt. The next possession got a huge momentum swing following a Panther touchdown. Quarterback Ryan Nettles connected with tight end Terrance Ellis for a 50-yard touchdown. ASU’s defense held them to a three and out but also was forced to punt, leaving both teams scoreless until the Hornets had back-to-back scoring drives.

Kicker Hunter Hanson completed a 35-yard drive with a field goal to make the game 10-7. Next scoring drive, Nettles ended it with another touchdown pass for 19 yards to wide receiver Keron Jones. Prairie View followed with a field goal making it 17-10. ASU got one more field goal just as time expires in the second quarter.

The third quarter was scoreless once again for both teams until the fourth. The fourth quarter was all Prairie View. The Panthers had two rushing touchdowns, one by Lyndemian Brooks for 14 yards and the other was by Jawon Pass for six yards. The Panthers completed their comeback and got the win as ASU goes back to the drawing board with interim head coach Travis Pearson.

This game looked as if Alabama state could handle a team that is well on its way to the SWAC Championship. This was the last game that they could make a statement with, and simply show some fight. Now with Texas Southern, Mississippi Valley, and Tuskegee left on the schedule the Hornets don’t have much to look forward to as these teams are not going past the regular season. The combined record of the remaining teams is 8-20.

Much work is to be done with this team. Heading into the 2022 offseason the team needs are head coach, offensive coordinator, and running back.
